Astronomers Think They Have a Warning Sign for When Massive Stars are About to Explode as Supernovae

The red supergiant stars are a potential source of explosions. They appear swollen and red because they are fusing heavier atoms in a last-ditch attempt to prevent collapse. But in the end, gravity will triumph, and the red supergiant's core will collapse, resulting in a supernova. We've always known it was inevitable, but the timing wasn't known.

Betelgeuse, a brilliant red star in Orion, is the most well-known example of a red supergiant. Roughly 550 light-years distant, it has the mass of 18 Suns and a diameter of about 5.5 arcseconds. Eventually, it will explode, making it brighter than the Moon, and it will be the nearest red supergiant to Earth. This, of course, has led to wild speculation over the star. Does it have the potential to go off within our lifetime? Is the supernova light already there, and we're simply waiting for it to arrive? No one in the astronomical community is sure, but the best guess is that it's not.

Recent research, however, may allow us to know months in advance that Betelgeuse will explode.

Ancient astronomers saw Betelgeuese as a yellow star. It's noted in many old records. Having only become a red giant in the last 1, 000 years or so. So no, it isn't gonna blow for a long time yet.

FYI, read about "recurrent nova", that's what is happening, and that's may will inevitably happen some day with the Sun.

Sorry for being that guy, but shouldn't you have said 'Betelgeuse will have exploded about 500 years ago, whenever we will pick up the light of the supernova'?

It is behaving strangly today. Betelgeuse is constantly changing.

Its 642 light years away. So if it explodes, does that mean it already exploded back in the 1400s here on earth?

For no logical reason I suspect that Betelgeuse has already gone supernova and it will light up our sky within 10 years.

Odds are I am wrong. But I don't believe in chance or luck.
