93,000 Pakistani soldiers surrendered on this day 51 years ago - The story behind this historic day

India is celebrating Vijay Diwas on December 16 to commemorate the 51st anniversary of its win over Pakistan in the 1971 war. Around 93,000 armed Pakistani soldiers surrendered before the Indian army on this day, the largest surrender since World War II. The Indian Army brought Pakistan to its knees in just 13 days forcing them to sign a ceasefire. The ‘Instrument of Surrender’ was signed between the GOC-in-C of Indian Eastern Command Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora, and Commander of the Pakistan Eastern Command Lt Gen A.A.K. Niazi on Dec 16, 1971.

No doubt this was a huge military defeat and jawans should be appreciated till time immemorial. What boggles the mind is the cowardly politicians in Bharat snatching geopolitical defeat from the jaws of victory by not demanding from Pakistan a single concession on Kashmir in exchange for returning the prisoners. What huge missed opportunity.
