I'm a 12 year old girl. I also have sickle cell anemia, the difference between us is that I get pain crisis every month. It is a difficult disease to deal with but as soon as I receive my blood transfusion I feel like a whole new person it gives me all my energy back. One time I passed out because the pain load was way too much. My mom died 9.5hrs after I was born because she was supposed to have a Ceserian section since the pain of giving birth with sickle cell was too much for her. The nurse made her push me. She ruptured her uterus. She bled out while going in and out of consciousness. Dealing with my disease makes me feel like I am putting up a fight and making my mom proud of me.

I’ve seen this time and time again. My dad just passed away from sickle cell, a day after my birthday, on thanksgiving night. He lived to be 55 years old, a week shy from his 56th. It’s really painful to see your loved one in so much pain, in which they can’t control.
