"Angel" by Sarah McLachlan - Piano cover by Emily Linge

Special thanks to @OvidioDeFerrari for helping with the piano arrangement.

Lyrics:

Spend all your time waiting
For that second chance
For the break that would make it okay
There's always some reason
To feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day

I need some distraction
Oh beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
Let me be empty
Oh and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight life
And everywhere you turn
There's vultures and thieves at your back
The storm keeps on twisting
Keeps on building the lies
That you make up for all that you lack

Don't make no difference
Escaping one last time
It's easier to believe
In this sweet madness
Oh, this glorious sadness
That brings me to my knees

In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
Oh-oh Oh-oh-oh

Hi Emily! _(Mini-review)..._

⭐️⭐️⭐️ *An incredibly beautiful & tranquil performance!* ⭐️⭐️⭐️ You did the cover "Angels" by Robbie Williams"; and now "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. How appropriately both near Christmas time! The lyrics to this cover are inspiring however for the New Year ahead; especially with the tribulations we've all had in 2020. So this song is a lovely gift for the start of the year! Excellent choice Emily! 😃

I was so hoping that you'd perform this beautiful song! What's also special about this performance; is that it's being played on the piano, just like the original. A lot of other artists cover it using guitar; so I can't wait to review your piano rendition. 🙂

As the song starts; straight away there's a terrific close-up of the piano! 🎹 Then at 0:15, it suddenly cuts to you starting to sing; and I'm blown away instantly with; ♫ "Spend all your time waiting"♪. Wow! What a magical voice! It's so alluring and buttery smooth. The attributes of your voice are rich in texture and irresistible. I think the term "magical" sums it all up! 😊 Outstandingly good voice we have here!! 👩 🎤

There's a touch of reverb and stereo ambience to your voice; so when you sing, it just takes the listener on a journey and envelops them into the song! We actually get swept up into a peaceful calm, as your voice is so soothing! At 0:29, there's a marvelous close-up of you as you sing: ♫ "Some reason, to feel not good enough"♪. This presentation is hypnotic! It has you glued to the screen, as you listen and watch this raw and emotional performance! Bravo! 👍

The visuals are a little different to the recent videos we have seen. There has been some creativity and thought gone into this one; as there's a hint of warm amber lighting overall; with you lovely attired in a gossamer type lilac dress, (hope my analogy is correct!); which suits the scene perfectly. Your presentations are always impeccable! 🏆 This really is a first class looking video! 🎥

The recording is very crisp! 🎧 Also due to the straight on camera angle; it's hard to tell but it seems you are a little closer to the Manley mic, 🎙️ which would help capture all the lovely lower rich texture in your golden voice! Every line in this song sounds wonderful. This cover is incredible! At 0:34; ♫ "And it's hard at the end of the day"♪; captures tranquil emotion in your vocals. 😊 Then at 0:50; ♫ "Let me be empty; oh and weightless and maybe"♪, oh wow! what terrific control and use of head-notes and high notes blended together! Superb singing!❗️

Yes! This performance is astonishing!!! You start to sing the chorus, then at 1:09; ♫ "Fly away from here"♪; is mesmerizingly beautiful. You have us spellbound! 🤗 Plus I love the little touch of a trill of high piano notes at 1:14. 🎹 I wished you looked at the camera a bit more; although you give some wonderful eye-contact at 1:21, which was a nice interaction! Perhaps overall in this rendition, I think you're so transfixed yourself, into playing the piano and performing in this masterpiece presentation! It's truly an awesome song and the way you are conveying it so tenderly is utter beauty! As said before; you have us spellbound! Your singing is sensational. 👍 You're not rushing the song; but giving it the atmosphere space that it needs, as we are absorbing the magic you give us! Astounding!!! ⭐️

At 1:32; I like your little twist on; ♫ "Of your silent reverie"♪, and at 1:44; ♫ "May you find some comfort here"♪. It was interesting how you hold and sustain the lyric "find", with lovely vibrato! We now go to a nice close-up at 1:52 of the Steinway & Sons Grand piano. 🎹

I spoke too soon! 😌 As now at 1:58; you give expressive eye-contact and work the camera intimately as you sing: ♫ "So tired of the straight life, and everywhere you turn "♪. (did you sing "straight line"?). At 2:06; ♫ "There's vultures and thieves at your back"♪; and you're starting to gently introduce more dynamics into the song. The way you're doing this is remarkable. You really are mastering the control in your vocals and they are so delightful to listen to; as you magnetically pull us into this performance. This requires skill... and you have that gift! 🤗

What a pure gem of a line at 2:17; ♫ "That you make up for all that you lack"♪. Such smooth subtle dynamics being full of emotion! This whole verse is brilliantly sung! For example at: 2:34 ♫ "Oh, this glorious sadness, that brings me to my knees"♪; you are pitch-perfect! 👏 🎤 Just prior, there was also another terrific close-up at 2:22, but I wished you glanced up at the camera, as it would have been a bonus! 😃 At 2:47, you resume the chorus again: ♫ "In the arms of the Angel"♪; then have us spellbound once more with more astonishing singing at 2:52; ♫ "Fly away from here"♪; with the little touch of high piano notes again at 2:57. 🎹 There's nice camera interaction at 3:02 with; ♫ "Hotel room"♪; as you acknowledge the audience.

At 3:43, you've been brave again and introduced another piano solo into your performance! (like you did with "Imagine"), With the help of Ovidio with the arrangement, you've pulled off another pretty little piece that goes through the Angel chord sequence and intertwines nicely into the arrangement. Subjectively though; Emily this was a tease! It would have even worked quite well if was twice as long! As we just start to enjoy it but it finishes; whilst we're soaking up your beautiful playing! 🎹 😊

Introducing the solo was a creative idea, as it gave the song theme a small musical break; which therefore gave a nice refreshing resumption for your vocals at 4:05 with; ♫ "In the arms of the Angel"♪. I like the repeating of the chorus at 5:00; as it's the nice way to finish the song. Your voice sounds so pure! 🎼 💕

_In conclusion..._
This may be a slowly sung song, but you have us hanging on to every note likes it's the last! You take us on this serene caressing journey as you sing!! You put your whole-self into the song with such heart-felt emotion as you convey the lyrics to the meaning of being in "The Arms Of An Angel" (which is a title that some artists use). This is tranquility at it's best! The way you treat the song so tenderly is pure magic! 💗 👍

It would be fun seeing you do a collaboration with Chiara; so as to hear some of those wonderful harmonies together in this song! But to do the whole song solo is a marvelous feat! *This is another magnificent performance!* Superb! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

_PS: Audio question: the piano's been recorded in an 'XY panning technique' for the rich stereo sound; but can you tell me what mics you use? Are they new ones?_

I’m 39 weeks and 4 days pregnant. My baby gets active and worships with me every single time I play this. I’m going to play this on repeat in my delivery room, as I could not think of a better time to worship and praise God
