I tried the DuckDuckGo Privacy Browser :( - My first impressions

DuckDuckGo has released a browser. At this time it's only for Mac, but they say a Windows version is coming soon. Privacy isn't something you need only in particular situations or in small doses, and it's a lie that you can't have the same Internet you want and need while also increasing your privacy. We make privacy easy with DuckDuckGo.

Their mobile apps, for example, make privacy the default, with no convoluted settings, no need to grasp the ins and outs of technology, just built-in privacy protections that function, such as private search, tracker blocking, website encryption (HTTPS upgrade), and email security. Since their inception in 2018, you've downloaded them over 150 million times, and we've heard from you that you want the same "privacy, simple" experience on your desktops and laptops.

Their built-in private search engine, powerful tracker blocker, *new* cookie pop-up protection on approximately 50% of sites (with that percentage growing significantly throughout beta), Fire Button (one-click data clearing), email protection, and more are all included in a single download – all for free. There are no sophisticated privacy settings; simply basic privacy protection that works out of the box.

You can obtain incredibly fast browsing by using your computer's built-in website rendering engine (the same one Safari uses) and blocking trackers before they load (unlike all the other major browsers). We're already faster than Chrome in some graphics tests (using the Motion Mark 1.2 benchmark) and, as an added bonus, DuckDuckGo consumes roughly 60% less data than Chrome by blocking trackers!

Their built-in Smarter Encryption guarantees that you visit the encrypted (HTTPS) version of a website more frequently, and our tracker blocking ensures that you are less vulnerable to third-party scripts attempting to obtain your data. In addition, we built our product such that in-app data like history, bookmarks, and passwords are stored locally on your device by default and aren't available to DuckDuckGo.

Would you give the DDG Browser a try?

*I forgot to mention in the video that they do plan to open source the browser.

After hearing about DDG tracking everyone, despite what they claimed, I don't trust them. Good review! I'll stick to Brave for now.

It seems like an ok browser, but some of their recent stances on curating information is problematic, their COE has done significant harm to their brand. I’ll stick with Brave for now, does the same thing.

I really appreciate the review, probably wont be using this browser but it is nice to see more companies stepping up to provide some options for limiting tracking, for the layman this could be a good potential option to secure your online presence with less work, would like to see some Tracker or Ad hardening videos at the router, if you are familiar with DDWRT or OpenWRT, something similar if its in your wheel house, either way great review!

The browser is based on google webview (which means security depends on webview updates, and don't forget google telemetry) and has very primitive security settings, zero fingerprinting protection. Even though the browser is based on Google Webview, it has a very large installation size of about 40 MB. In my own observations, DDG has a pretty good ad blocker, but same Firefox + ublock handles ads much more effectively.

I would love to see some speed tests and generic performance benchmarks, I'm a Windows user waiting for the PC release of this browser and I have hopes for it's future.

Well now the browser is out and I have to say it leaves me wanting.
Pros: I do prefer using the Duck Player for youtube videos.
Cons: There is no option to show a drop down file menu, which I use a lot. If you show the bookmark bar, it has all your bookmarks on it. It does underline spelling errors, but you have to correct manually as right clicking offers no corrections. The settings are sparse. Not available on Linux.

It would probably be weird if they blocked first-party trackers, then allowed theirs when you visit their website

I was curious about this browser. Now I'm not remotely interested
