Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return

No guarantees for tomorrow. TODAY is all that matters.

On the very day I adopted my cat 14 years ago, I reminded myself that one day I'll have to say goodbye. Earlier this month, she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, which means that goodbye is about to come. I still found myself bawling uncontrollably after I received the news, but I think I'm handling things a lot better than I would've if I hadn't discovered Stoicism and the practice of negative visualization.

Memento mori!

One of my school friends took her own life last year. The evening before we were together at a friend's wedding party, all friends talking casually about Life

The email was, call 911 for me. I'm dying and I can't find my phone

A friend of mine died at age 45. I was already familiar with memento mori, but that really solidified it. Thanks for all the you do, Ryan.

Damn I’m sorry that sounds tough. I always try to meditate on death but I put it to the side then I hear that people suddenly die of CO poisoning or a stray bullet hit them or stuff like this and it just puts thing into perspective.

So glad the righteous will see our loved ones again in Heaven!

Stoics also say that you shouldn't be so reachable so you did what stoic would do - not answer immediately. This two lessons kinda counter each other because you can respond immediately as if someone was dying or not be so reachable

This is a natural thing that I've been doing since my first child nearly 30 yrs ago, everytime I leave them, even if only to bed, " I love you always " and say if I leave them if my wife and I are going somewhere together, AGAIN I say " I love you, DON'T ever forget that " and go to whoever is watching iver them, jokingly i say, " if they're hurt when i come back, " YOU ARE GOING TO BE HELD RESPONSIBLE AND EXPECT THE SAME FROM ME AS YOU DIDN'T WATCH THEM RIGHT " MY WIFE SAYS " HE'S JOKING!" IN THE CAR I SAY " YOU KNOW I'M NOT JOKING? RIGHT ! " STOP WILL YA !!! SHE WOULD SAY...
LIFE IS SO FRAGILE, AND I ABSOLUTELY AM AWARE OF THIS...

Considering how many of children Marcus lost, that is a particularly remarkable reflection on his part.

I am eternally amazed by how disconnected from death many people are. People in these comments talking about losing friends or family AS AN ADULT, and just NOW realizing "the reality" of death. By the time I graduated high school, I had 12 FRIENDS, classmates, die...some suicides, a couple murdered, most accidents, and a couple of freak medical conditions. By the same point in my life, I had lost almost as many family members...3 grandparents, a couple uncles, a couple aunts...mostly extended family. And I went to all the funerals. I knew death was common and inevitable. I have no fear of death. I prefer to keep living...I enjoy my life most of the time, but when my time comes, I don't feel I'll be anxious about it.

I seldom do this very thing with each of my boys. I thought I was going crazy but I later realized every time I’m with them, I strive to make deep and long lasting connections. I simply came to realized how to appreciate the time I do have with them much more.

On the flip side, by delaying responding to his email, you eliminated an unnecessary action by his death. Now that he's gone, you no longer need to eespond at all. Bonus points, since he died on Sunday, he likely wouldn't have even read your email prior to dying. Instead, your time was spent doing things that were both relevant and had some impact on the future.

The Bible says "As a man thinkth, so he is" we attract thing we focus on. See your children happy with children of their own, with you there to enjoy them all

Lately, Depeche Mode comes to my mind real often whenever I hear the phrase "Memento Mori." 👈🙂

My elders sometimes say it and I kinda shiver and cringe over the reality of that statement. For instance they will say if we don’t die and stay alive enshallah (god willing) see you tomorrow.

There will be a last time for everyone and everything. But let us not forget, there was also a first time. This is the order of things. Live well 💞🙏🏽

I live almost constantly like this. Certainly daily. It haunts me.
