The gaming industry recently released a video to disprove gaming disorder, so I analyze it and discuss what's true, and what's propaganda.

Is gaming disorder real? What do you think?

I got bored of playing games a year or two ago. I just upgraded my PC because I draw using a drawing tablet, I wanted a good PC for that. I installed some game just to test the PC. It was so boring and felt unproductive.

I have seen thousands of people playing video game without any problem but normalizing the problem is such a disrespect towards people like me

I feel like the gaming side did little to no research on for this video. It's sad that they care about it this little.

Hey this was great! I’ve worked in tech as an entrepreneur for years and totally agree that the gaming addiction challenges are real. Thanks for bringing this information forward! One of my companies even used MMO’s to recruit developers because of the nature of a person that was heavily involved in MMO’s !

This is highly reminiscent to cigarette companies fighting research that smoking leads to increased possibilities of lung cancer. They made the exact same claims, cherry picking research that was in line with their thinking while ignoring the bulk of research that went against their profit margins.

Thank you for posting this video. Like you said, there are tens of thousands of players who want to quit playing video games and have been unable to do so. That alone should indicate that there is an addictive nature to gaming which is just now starting to be addressed.

Thank you very much for this video. The ESA's distortions sound remarkably similar to the anti-science propaganda by Big Coal, Big Oil, Big Tobacco, the NFL, etc.

It’s sad to see how money can corrupt an industry like this. It reminds me of big tobacco when they tried to deny that smoking was harmful to health.

Thank you for revealed these issues it is very informatic. In game disorder topic I think, gaming addiction is real there are tons of evidence for example : (maybe you know this book bc Zimbardo very famous) Philip Zimbardo's ''Man Disconnected''. He has explained to us what is gaming addiction and what is effects.
(Sorry for English I am still learning)
in addition, I strongly recommend you to read Holger Feindel's Internet Addiction

But think of all those girls with STEM degrees! Do you want to take ALL of that away!? You gave me a few nice giggles there Cam :D

I've been watching a ton of Jordan Peterson's lectures in the past month who is a clinical psychologist. He agrees that addictions are symptoms of underlying depression and anxiety that have been caused by some neglect in the person's life, such as poor childhood or that they get so overwhelmed by life that they develop them. He also stated that depression or anxiety as a standalone mental problem without any external causes is extremely rare. I think this idea also holds true, seeing it from the GQ forum, where there are some VERY big revelations from virtually anyone who has used gaming as their band-aid to cover up their depression or anxiety.

Day 51 for me, but I know we're in for the long haul.

Thanks for doing this!

Watching this video while my younger brother ravaging League of Legends, a match after another, since long hours.
The industry is gaining more experience on engineering addicting games.

As an artist illustrator creative person... I built up my pc to handle what I needed it to do... but also being a long time dota player... I played dota again... one night after a game my team was rubbing some serious salt in a team we just trashed... after that game I realised the person I am while gaming is not me... I deleted dota immediately. But because I have had another addiction in my life I drew similarities between the two... I stopped gaming completely. The standard of the art I produced increased literally overnight, my relationship with my wife is better, I spend more time with my daughter; I draw more; I study more... this is just a few things. I love not feeling that constant pressure of wanting to go play and not always feeling exhausted during the day... I feel freedom. So even if gaming addiction is not real... I can assure you the benefits of not gaming for someone creative by nature far outweighs the pleasure of gaming. Now I cringe when I think about the time I wasted and what I could have achieved... because I've been gaming since I was about 10 or 11...But that cringe feeling keeps me away... God bless the kids growing up today that are bombarded with this industry... it will be hard.

Cam, I am so much more glad to have found you than any game I ever discovered before. And this response by the gaming industry is while understandable, a dirty move.

At least alcohol, smoking and to some extend sugar are recognized as dangerous for your health an no one, not even the connected industries, are trying to shift away the blame.

I hope there will be as paradigm shift in the future.

They must not have been happy with this news dropping with E3 round the corner. They also forgot to investigate the possibility that gaming disorder can potentially LEAD to those other mental health issues they believe will be left untreated with this so-called "misdiagnosis." Any way what kind of shrink will "misdiagnose" a patient for one disorder and happen to not test/identify their patient is also suffering from several others? A quack, that's who.
