Enlightenment philosopher David Hume was a critic of Stoicism. His most quoted dictum - "Reason is, and ought only to be, the slave of the passions" - seems to contradict Stoic thinking. But how different were Hume's ideas about emotion and reason from the Stoics? In this short video, I'll unpack the ideas and explain.

I think it is a misunderstanding to depict that the Stoics were saying for us to pacify our emotions…on the contrary they were interested in “Ataraxia” an untroubled mind that can surf the emotion. So a young David Hume missed the point on this.

Also, The Stoics contemplation on death is not designed for us to feel morbid and sink into despair that we will die. Instead it is a call to begin living fully since our time is limited.

Also donald trump invokes people’s emotions to those who are unskilled in the use of reason.

Epictetus is adamant about — to those of us who are interested in freedom — to grok the empowerment that is available to us once we take refuge in our divine ability to reason. Something donald trump completely lacks.
