We shoot in Log because we want to see “how many color fairies can dance on the head of pin” but in practical terms does that really matter if the end viewer of the video on their phone or tablet can’t see them in a YouTube video.

Is the climb up the mountain (the extra effort to color grade a video shot on a FF mirrorless camera) worth the view from the top (compared to the same scene shot in Rec. 709 on an iPhone)?

I started dealing with color management in the late 1970s as production manager at a large high-end magazine printer. We printed AIA Journal, Architectural Record, Antiques and others where the customer expectations for color reproduction where quite high compared to the transparencies they viewed on light boxes. Part of my job was conducting seminars on color management to lower their expectations to the reality of the color gamut the CYMK inks we printed with could produce. Twenty years later it was a matter of explaining why the deep purples and blue colors and contrast of the digital images viewed on their uncalibrated Windows sRGB monitor didn’t match the final printed product.

I shot a few 16mm and 8mm films in the 1970s but gave up on it because it was far more difficult than shooting stills and the end product wasn’t as good. At that point I was working for top wedding photographer and could I could shoot, develop and print B&W as well as Ansel Adams because I learned to do it from his Basic Photo Series zone system books and fit the entire range from black suits to brides dress onto color film by knowing how to use fill and key lighting to adjust scene to the range of the color prints.

I shot video in the mid-80s and 90s, purchasing my Sony 8mm camera in Tokyo just after it was released. But as with film the limiting factor was the editing process. I bought a high-end Betamax and Sony editing console but the final product viewed on NTSC CRT TV was crap.

My next attempt at video was in 2012. I waited for the iPad3 which had a 1080p camera and the ability to produce nicely edited videos on the same platform with the iMovie app, which at the time cost $5. In the first week I had it I live-streamed a family wedding via cellular hotspot and shot and edited video of the reception and a family whale watching trip the next day, editing in iMovie as I shot an uploading to YouTube for the first time. That was the point in time nearly everyone had a computer connected to the internet and a smart phone with a cell plan which made watching YouTube videos anywhere affordable.

That was the point I stopped taking stills and switched to videos, upgrading my iPad and phone and adding external shotgun and wireless lav mics instead of buying newer DSLR bodies and computers to edit the video on. I didn’t bother with color management because I didn’t need to. The video shot with phone and iPad looked good out of the camera.

Over the past three years I shot and posted weekly videos of my new house construction and nearly 200 golf tutorial without a single complaint from views on YouTube about video or audio quality. So why then did I just buy $2, 500 mirrorless camera, $2, 600 100-500mm lens, $800 fluid head tripod, $3, 500 Mac M2 mini pro / 5k Studio Monitor and DaVinci Resolve Studio with Speed Editor?

I want to shoot stills and video of birds and wildlife and at age 71 challenge myself to learn new professional level video skills, shooting and editing, on par with were I am in still photography. Learning to shoot and edit in Log is a necessary part of that learning curve. Practically speaking I could shoot in Rec. 700 and not seen much difference in my videos viewed on phone and iPad, but it does make a difference when viewed on a large screen UHD TV.

For me the process is more one of enjoying the climb up a new learning curve, rather than the difference I’ll see in the view from the top when I get there 😃
