After Brexit: Are the EU and UK on a Collision Course?

Показать описание
In this video the Chairman and Director of the Federal Trust, John Stevens and Brendan Donnelly, discuss the likely future course of EU-UK relations and whether the two are on a collision course. They predict friction will be the dominant feature of the relationship, both because of the nature of the Brexit project and because of the perceived electoral advantage of the Conservative Party from such friction. They also discuss the constitutional destabilisation Brexit is bringing with it, in Northern Ireland, in Scotland and in Wales. They predict that a political force will emerge in the medium term which will represent the many millions of British voters eager to re-join the EU. No major political party currently performs this function.

Guest: John Stevens is the Chairman of the Federal Trust and a former Conservative Party MEP (1989-1999).

Brendan Donnelly is the director of the Federal Trust and former MEP.

ABOUT THE FEDERAL TRUST
The Federal Trust is a research institute studying the interactions between regional, national, European and global levels of government. Founded in 1945 on the initiative of Sir William Beveridge, it has long made a powerful contribution to the study of federalism and federal systems. It has always had a particular interest in the European Union and Britain’s place in it. The Federal Trust has no allegiance to any political party. It is registered as a charity for the purposes of education and research.

It is neither in the EU's interest nor part of its global concept to be on a collision course with a neighbour.
But it is in its interest to protect its single market its customs union and most of all its citizens.

The real miscalculation by the Brexit Government is that it believed that it was dealing with the Irish republic but the reality is that it's dealing with the are never talking to Florida you are talking to the USA!...

The EU just keeps its course, if the UK wants to be in the way then yes, there will be a collision. Note that the EU does not purposefully seek a collision.
Anyways, UK had all the cards wasn’t it?

The EU kept the Uk united.. Now that the UE is gone its just a question of time before the UK is dismantled

No extra time, no illegal “grace period” unlocks the impossible Irish conundrum now heading to court. Once out of the single market and customs union there were just two options, both terrible: a UK-splitting customs border between Great Britain and Northern Ireland; or a peace-deal-breaking hard border within Ireland. No wonder Johnson lied about what he had signed.

The only answer is Norway-shaped: putting all the UK into the single market and the customs union restores frictionless trade, with no Irish borders. But Britain is still EMOTIONALLY miles away from recognising that necessity...

The UK's pronlem is that it decided to become a 3rd country outside of both the CU and SM but doesn't like being treated like one.

Why do you think only the economic relation is damaged? What do you think about the personal damage. If you blame the EU you blame the Europeans of 27 nations. Do you think that will just be forgotten?

"You're either with me or against me".
There is no example of one country helping another country without strings attached. Enough said.

It is all nice and fine to talk about rejoining the EU. But, please also consider the other side of the discussion. We Europeans will only ever seriously sit down with You islanders, after You have fixed Your constitution, Your election system, your and all the other issues that led to BREXIT in the first place. You will be welcome to the EU again - but only after You have provably learned Your lessons and once and for all retreated from Your imperialistic self-cheating.

7:20 After bendy bananas, I'm not sure that the hardliners will ever base their opinion on facts and reality. They're like the band on the Titanic, playing whilst sinking.

Public opinion will be very slow to change as the Brexit problems aren't being reported in the newspapers most people read.

I wondered why Keir Starmer seemed to be so ineffectual despite his obvious abilities. You answer this question (and many others) for me. I look forward to your next discussion

I seems the government is pleased that we are doing a deal with New Zealand to import meat without the 20 percent tariff that is applied by the EU is this good? Meat from France was tariff free, customs, free and with little transportation cost. How will this stand up to importing and transporting meat from the other side of the world?

I very much agree. My believe is that Brexir will be reversed by the now younger people who -in the contrast to Trump, Johnson and other nationalistic guys- understood that global economic, ecologic and security challenges can only be solved through trustful cooperation and a sincere will to compromise. Let’s work together to keep the time to this point as short as possible.
