It's Not a Gas Supply Crisis, it's a Gas Export Crisis

Gas prices in Australia are soaring, but not because of a shortage of gas. It's because our governments have given free rein to gas exports. Now Australians compete with global export prices for our own gas, while gas companies make even bigger profits.

Climate & Energy Program Researcher Alia Armistead explains.

I have work all over Australia in the gas industry... Pipelines....Gas Powered Turbine Power stations...Major gas plant in the Cooper basin “BALLARA”...Huge Compressor Stations all over Queensland....ect..ect. And believe me when I tell you we have sooo much natural gas in this country it’s more available then water. I have seen all the maps with all the Gas Wells that are Capped and it’s in the thousands.

All we as a nation need do is pass legislation and enforce national supply, whilst building as much renewable infrastructure as possible, then allow export, up until gas production is turned off as uneconomic or by world political agreement.

I am spewing Labor made it to majority government, It would of been exciting to see how the teals or the greens would of influenced the government.

This commentary is exactly right with a minimum amount of LNG suggested to be kept in reserve for use in Australia at all times.
We are in the top three exporters of LNG worldwide so when gas shortages are mentioned it is because of excessive exportation to other countries.

Open captions. Love it. So much more accessible to same-language speakers than needing to fiddle with settings.

Nationalise the gas industry. It’s not like they pay any tax as they offshore profits plus rake in huge government subsidies.

Someone tell Chris Bowen that Governments also have the ability to legislate new laws, new taxes etc on gas companies if they don't want to play ball.

Why can't we have a one Government one person in control.
Democracy 2 party is two steps back 1 inch forward.
Why did Morrison sell our GAS to India...
Our politicians should be held accountable...for criminal neglect of their citizens.

While I agree that we need far more renewable energy in the system, there is no way we can build enough in the short term to help this crisis as it stands. What can the government do to change the gas reserve capacity and lower prices in the short term? Pass new legislation?

This needs to be fixed quickly. Grid costs are around $400 per MWH atm. I read that WA has a system to hold gas for domestic use that is working well to lower prices?

The LNP did this, dont just say government. You need to name them!! All the time and every day so people dont forget.

Take the profits and invest them in renewables. What other nation gives all the profits for Australia’s resources to some select few private multinational companies. The entire gas (and fossil fuel) industry should have much, much more regulation and control by the federal government. Old policies and contracts can and should be ripped up and changed.

Electrifying everything is a medium to long term solution. That's not going to fix the immediate crisis, which absolutely requires some kind of domestic gas reservation policy enacted ASAP.

How are renewables (actually replaceables) cheaper? Take the heavy subsidies away and add the cost of disposable & replacement not just the cost of operation and they are the more expensive. Please understand how electricity works before you make the comments that are in this video.

So go around the agreements and legislation and nationalize all the gas companies from exploration and extractions to transmission and export nationalize and vertically integrated the entire industry. It will be easier to wind it up when the time comes and you will be removing power from your political enemies.

6 months is going to go by anyway.. why not negotiate it regardless of other options on the table?
Seems like a prudent decision to get a half decent deal on gas in 6+ months time.. especially as you don't note a time frame even ramping up renewables would take to remove gas dependence.
I'm all up for clean and green power but I think the argument presented in this video is pretty sub-par or made because of agenda.
Please do correct me if I'm wrong or don't have the full picture of the point.

so driving from Melb to Cairns via the inland route in an electric 4x4 do I need to carry a diesel generator.

So you are saying we need a greater mix of renewables and the infrastructure to support this. I hope you will support a realistic chunk of that coming from nuclear power because smart progressives need to step up about this transition and help convince the nation to be as agnostic as possible so we have the most robust energy grid as possible. Unfortunately we have been stuck in ideology prisons where conservatives have denied anything needs to change and progressives have demanded purity over practicality.
