Where Is the Path to 6G, and How Do We Get There?

As 5G networks deploy and novel services and technologies find a place to thrive, a new ecosystem has begun to mature. Advanced compute and storage, empowered by distributed multi-cloud resources, are lifting constraining limitations to fuel application innovation. Through this journey, three postulates have emerged throughout the ecosystem: 5G will evolve into 6G, the vision for 6G will benefit from experiences with 5G, and 6G will emerge out of various technological and social advances. By innovating in virtualization, multi-cloud grid, time-sensitive fabrics, and distributed applications, VMware is driving innovation throughout the entire edge-to-cloud continuum. The Open Grid Alliance, the ATIS NextG Alliance, and the National Science Foundation’s RINGS program are the important initiatives to help realize this vision.
