Apprenticeship vs Uni | Making the Right Choice?

In this video, I'm sharing my decision to enrol in an apprenticeship rather than pursue a university degree. I know there are a lot of people out there who are choosing to go to university, and I wanted to share my story and explain why I made the decision I did.

I actually just left corporate after 6 years (and 2 degrees) to start a building apprenticeship. Really enjoying learning real skills and seeing my efforts come to life.

Got my degree in finance and now starting a carpentry apprenticeship. Construction does seem like a better Segway into business, especially when many more are self employed. A degree by itself usually keeps you reliant on a much bigger organisation for work. I think I would tell my former self to get a trade and with all your extra passion for business study after work. There are many reasons I prefer the trades over white collar jobs.

1. Culture. Where I'm at now there are no games or politics. Everything is straight forward: be on time, do what you're told and get your shit done. If you need assistance or clarification, ask.

2. It's healthier work imo. Man was simply not made to sit in a cubicle and stare at a computer screen all day. Just make sure to invest in good high quality gear (knee pads and work boots especially) and be careful at all times.

3. It makes more sense financially. In the US, student loan debt is one of the biggest budget busters and you are not even guaranteed a job when you graduate. With the trades you are paid to learn and will make pretty good money once you become a journeyman. Where I'm at, journeymen start off at $30/hr. While not the bkggest salary, making that while debt free is a MUCH better start for your early 20's than the average college student.

4. Days go by MUCH faster. If you stay focused on your tasks and stay off your phone you'll be amazed how quick eight hours can go.

5. It is FAR less boring.

6. Better applicability in your personal life.

7. More opportunities to opening your own business or becoming an independent contractor.

Back in '84, I loathed school, so I got out & started a Joinery apprenticeship the next day. 3 years into the 4yrs, i passed my trade cert & on the 4th yr, passed advanced trade as well. The factory I worked in did both timber & aluminium joinery & before long I went into aluminium (as timber windows & doors were phased out). I've since worked at 5 factories (with options to buy into 2 of them). I progressed from simple manufacturer to estimator, to CNC programmer & operator. I also did long haul deliveries around the upper north island (I'm based in Hamiton & our range was Silverdal - north Auckland, below Taupo, coast to coast & all over the Coromandel). I stopped working (medical) almost 7yrs ago, but don't reget my decision to leave school.

the decision between business degree and an apprenticeship was a big one for me. 7 months into my apprenticeship and keen as to start my own business asap!

This is a great summary thanks for sharing. I am currently doing a diploma in construction management/ quantity surveying here in nz, it’s a part time course and free for nz citizens under the fees free scheme. It has great insight into the industry and I feel it’s tailor made for tradies wanting to put down the tools.

I'm 18, and I would love to pursue an apprenticeship. However, I currently have a dependent child student visa. Can I enroll in an apprenticeship with this visa? What are the requirements for enrolling in an apprenticeship?

Hey man, I’m thinking of becoming and electrician. I was going to go into uni to do software engineering. I currently am 18 just finished school working as a battery technician, building and repairing forklift batteries and chargers.

I enjoy the hands on work but even my boss which is an electrician’s recommends university if you can do it.

Really hard to know what to choose, he just says being around smarter people will make you smart as an electrician your going to dumb yourself down to the tradesmen you work with.
