It doesn't matter who sang the first version. All are beautiful and unique. I know very well the Turkish and the Greek version, which I really love. The Greek melody version is a little bit faster than the original Turkish one and was usually being danced in the steps of Sirtobalos.

I love this song. Sadly the first version I heard was the one Eartha Kitt sang. Normally I like her work. But the 'translation' was 100% wrong - deliberately so so for comedic effect. Thankfully I have since found genuine renditions of this song, such as this one.
