A band I was in (1995) did this same thing in a small town in PA.
I remember when it was so cold trying to play guitar with gloves on (quickly cut the fingers out).
We didn't do it to annoy the sparse neighbors.
We did it because we loved music and wanted to play regardless of temp or a comfortable space.
