I Love My Goals More Than My Friends

How I got here…

21: Graduated Vanderbilt in 3 years Magna Cum Laude, and took a fancy consulting job.
23 yrs old: Left my fancy consulting job to start a business (a gym).
24 yrs old: Opened 5 gym locations.
26 yrs old: Closed down 6th gym. Lost everything.
26 yrs old: Got back to launching gyms (launched 33). Then, lost everything for a 2nd time.
26 yrs old: In desperation, started licensing model as a hail mary. It worked.
27 yrs old: "Gym Launch" does $3M profit the next 6 months. Then $17M profit next 12 months.
28 yrs old: Started Prestige Labs. $20M the first year.
29 yrs old: Launched ALAN, a software company for agencies to work leads for customers. Scaled to $1.7mmo within 6 months.
31 yrs old: Sold 75% of UseAlan to a strategic buyer in an all stock deal.
31 yrs old: Sold 66% of Gym Launch & Prestige Labs at $46.2M valuation in all-cash deal to American Pacific Group. (you can google it)
32 yrs old: Started making free content showing how we grow companies to make real business education accessible to everyone (and) to attract business owners to invest or scale their businesses.

Today: Our portfolio now does $200M/yr between 10 companies. The largest doing $100M/yr the smallest doing $5M per year. Our ownership varies between 20% and 100% ownership of the companies. Many of them we invested in early and helped grow (which is how we make our money - not youtube videos).

To all the gladiators in the arena, we’re all in the middle of writing our own stories. The worse the monsters, the more epic the story.

You either get an epic outcome or an epic story. Both mean you win.

Keep crushing. May your desires be greater than your obstacles.

Never quit,

Alex

*FULL DISCLOSURE*
I make content to make money - just - on a longer time horizon than most. I want to build trust with business owners so we can find the best ones and help them scale. And if they’re awesome, write them a check and go all the way as partners.

What I like about Alex is how real he is about the cost of being the best. Do you really want to pay the price he's described here and elsewhere? Often, I don't...And that's ok.

This is great advice that can backfire if not careful. Studies show that having a strong supportive community is one of the best indicators of living a long healthy life. You risk bringing in superficial people that don’t really care about you and removing those that have always cared for you if you’re too deeply goal oriented.

To become that person, to hit your goals, you need to make tough choice and truly prioritize what matters for you and your progress.

Everything in life is not about your goals, it’s OK to just have friends that are your friends and not determine whether or not you are incrementally better off becoming a millionaire or selling more junk cause you have a friend. Everything in life is not about utility.

I love how this guy doesn’t give a fuck and just spits facts all of the time.
People will always say that “You are antisocial”, “You changed”, “You are acting weird”.
The thing is: if you truly believe who you are and who you are going to be, the outside is just noise.
Back to work.

Honestly think you’ll get there, and at the end of the goal rainbow you’ll learn it wasn’t worth the price you chose to pay.

I operated opposite of this because that’s what my religion taught me from a young age. So hello poverty. Now it’s time to change and do what he says here. Goals over people. Because for me there are a few people I will fight for. And because I put other people in front of all my goals and the two people I really need to be there for, I let them walk all over me, I grew resentful of them taking all my time and energy, and even more resentful when the results got me completely drained. So in reality, you actually will find your people as you go for your goals, and you’ll have the strength, stamina and ability to take care of the ones who really need you and you really care about, and say no to the people who should be strong enough, who are adults, who can figure it out themselves and not use you as they’re puppet.

Careful.

Warpaths are formed when you start putting progress before humanity.

But true, your greatest enemy is always gonna me the man in the mirror.

Goals over friends. Goals over family. Goals over myself.

What a sad way of viewing your life. I’m all for growth, striving for success, etc…..but at the end of the day relationships are the backbone of our existence. Who cares how wealthy and successful you are when you’re alone.
