2 Timothy 1:6 “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”
Different interpretations used different verbs: rekindle is one of them meaning flame the gift; fan the flames of the spiritual gift; kindle afresh (which means to be impassioned to set a fire on that which may be dormant;) keep ablaze the gift. Douay-Rheims Bible states: “Stir up the grace of God which is in thee.”
In each translation it points to reviving the gifts and re-kindling the slumbering ashes into a flame. In verse seven Paul encourages Timothy further on this subject so possibly Timothy was timid, not confident in using his gifts and allowed the flame to dwindle. This personally speaks to me, that if one who walked with Paul the apostle needed encouragement, then it would not be off-base for me to need that either.
Our gifts need to be developed through using them and we need to have the confidence that if God gave us these gifts, He will equip us to use them and His power will flow through us.
As an example, an artist must practice daily or the gift will disappear. We need to pray in the spirit on all occasions to keep the fire burning.
I believe it is time for all of us to stir the ashes into a new flame for today.
Blessings
