In this video i will show you how you can get a cloud virtual server with 4 CPUs and 8 gigabytes of memory, for less than 10 dollars a month. On which we will install the ubuntu desktop, and be able, via a remote desktop connection, to connect to it from anywhere in the world.
So, by the end of this video you will have a powerful machine, with a full ubuntu 20.04 desktop on it, separate from your current PC, allowing you to experiment and make mistakes on, without putting your current machine at risk., all for less than 10 dollars a month.
I have previously set up virtual servers at the 11 cloud providers you see on screen, but found that for 10 dollars per month, which is my budget, that gets you only a small, low powered instance, that will struggle to run a full desktop, so I started looking further afield.
The cloud provider I found was called Contabo, and their web site is on screen now. Because the process of ordering a server is a bit different to normal, I will show you what was involved when i placed my order.
When ordering a VPS there is a one-off setup fee, but that is written off if you sign up for 12 months, however as I had never used their servers before, I signed up for just a monthly contract, which will automatically roll over to the following month, but I would be able to cancel if I wanted too. As a result, I had to pay the 7-dollar one-off setup fee.
There were several addons available, none of which I took, I will however show you what the options were.
Having completed the previous screen, I am asked to fill in the normal contact information.
And finally, the payment method for the server I have ordered.

Congratulations for video. I did the procedure with success but de GUI is very, very low. There is a way to improve more screen speedy? The VPS is good but with this Screen speed, is dificult to work. If you can help, i appreciate that. Thanks!

Googeled and no standard worked at the end. The system allways showes a dummy sound output in the options.

Is anybody use this VPS for streaming through OBS? I use Contabo - Ubuntu 20.04 - 4CPU 8Gb - and when I start stream ONE video(7 minutes) 1080p 3- азы 500mb - processor load up to 90% - and the video is jerky ((( . Maybe someone has a solution for this?

putty wont let me input a password... the keyboard only accepts enter which writes pass incorrect. I can type the log in just fine but the pass doesn't work for some reason any idea?

I turned my contabo ubuntu vps with xfce desktop environment for RDP. but it sometimes lack. in your system, ubuntu gnome desktop works good in vps or not? I think xfce is too light, but network latency is not good.

Thanks! Awesome video. Still works in March 2024 with Ubuntu 22.04 at Contabo. Just set up a VPS for testing purposes and didn't expect to be able to use the GUI! :)

Thank you! I have one little issue with my contabo server. When I access the server via RPD i get an awfully low resolution that makes the OS almost unnavigationable. However when I connect to VNC the resolution is great but the framerate is super low. After some research it seems to do with the fact that VNC is fundamentally slow, but it's kind of annoying that I can't connect to RPD without that super-low resolution. Has anyone else had the same problem?

I have partially solved the problem by making an entire over-powered filemanager server on my VPS using python and flask, but it would be great if I could get the remote desktop to be faster as well.

Hello, I recently bought a Contabo and wanted to do OpenVPN, I tried opening ports manually and OpenVPN did not work, after a long time I installed Virtualmin panel and tried opening a port through it (FirewallD 1194/UDP), and OpenVPN worked! but there is a problem that when using I can not go online, can you tell me what to try?
