GMG REVIEWS: Warhammer 40,000 - CODEX: Necrons (2020)

Painting my indomitus necrons watching this, so excited to finally build a necrons army after always wanting a ”space undead army” ever since i first saw them as a kid 20+ years ago :)

I love that the silent king is a vehicle which means that you can let him auto explode with the 'Curse of the Phaeron' stratagem :D

The forge world necron centipedes of death are canoptek units which is terrifying with that heroic intervention strat.

The issue with RP isn't with the 1W models, or even 2W models, but with the 3W+ models such as the destroyer types. The new system in practice will mean that you will rarely see these 3W models re-animate. you will only have a decent chance of re-animating a 3W if you lose 3 models in an attack, and will on average roll two 5+ that will not fulfil the 3W stat line and so get discarded. As these units are 6max then you will on average only ever re-animate two models before the unit is wiped out, especially as more weapons now do multi-wound damage. The previous issue with wiping out a unit before they get a chance to enact re-animation has been replaced by another form of focus fire as your opponent will only ever need to at least destroy one model at a time per attack, as it will be near impossible to roll 5+ on all 3 dice. Losing two models at a time will not do much to improve those chances either. Living metal is only good and relevant if the model hasn't been destroyed. 

The fact that even a successful 5+ (which isn't great odds to begin with) isn't a guaranteed success as it could still get discarded. Being 1 wound away from re-animating a 3W model will get extremely frustrating and I suspect you will see less 3W units in Necron lists, and the dedicated Destroyer Cult list will rarely see the table top.

The rule should allow you to re-animate models with depleted wounds, as this means that a 5+ is a consistent successful role no matter the Necron model.

The new formatting for points is the nicest thing. The 8th edition codex formatting made me so so sad when writing lists, they were my least favourite GW book layours. This book has me so excited. It looks like it's gonna make building a fluffy army feel good. Which I love.

I'm excited about this.

Moving list building more towards AoS and using Power instead of points etc makes playing games easier and more fun to me.

Add Crusade and I may be heading towards my 40k Second Renaissance.
