These PS3 can now be saved with the Frankenstein mod making these OG PS3 reliable.

The only way to truly know what's wrong with it is to look at the error codes and once you do that you might end up getting lucky and it just needs a few new capacitors. It's not always overheating, The yellow line of death itself is just general hardware failure.

I literally just fixed a unit that had the exact same symptoms and the only thing wrong with it according to the error log was that the capacitors on the GPU side were dead, Replace them and now works perfectly.

For future reference, you want to hold the fan still while blowing it with an air duster. By letting it spin freely at high speeds it can build up an electric charge which can short out your motherboard.

It can still be fixed. The backwards compatible ones are hard to find around here.

The easiest way to spot a back compat PS3 is that it has shiny chrome trimming in the front, a regular non back compat fat PS3 has a more matt metal looking trimming.

This is why I gave up on backwards compatible models. I stick with the fats that are non-backwards compatible, because there's way less chance of YLOD, and they're much quieter. In September 2022, I found a non-backwards compatible CECHG01 at a flea market for $100. This one is one that everyone has given lots of hate towards, but so far I'm impressed with it for the year I've had it. No loud fan ever, no overheating, and no issues at all. It's like new practically, especially after I cleaned it up and polished it. I also got a CECHP01 on the way that I'm gonna give the same treatment too.

I fixed mines with a heatgun and then doing a 12v fan mod…loud fans constantly but has never failed me since

Fun fact, only the backwards compatible ones were chrome silver. The non BC ones were matte

I really wish sony added the ps/ps2 memory card slot in that lid or next to the 4 usbs

Pull the hard drive completely and also apply fresh thermal. Also check to see if the fan is even blowing

I had one but it blew up RIP 2006-2023

Most of them these days have fried GPUs, you're going to need a 65nm or 40nm replacement GPU and a BGA rework station to fix that.

I was at a yard sale the other day, and I bought the same thing for 10 dollars. Only no yellow light.

Got mine for £17 and had the same issue. I just used my hairdryer behind it for 20 minutes, cooled with a fan for 40 and it works like a charm. Usually that would make it stay on for a few minutes for some people. However it's been 2 1/4 hours for me and it is still working

It's not a bad hdd. It's the thermal paste behind the processor needs to be replaced. Then it will work fine.

If youre really careful you can pop out the IO sheilds on the CPU/GPUs and repaste new thermal paste. But ve careful. They can be easily damaged and they are a pain to get rid of bcs of strong adhesive around the sheilds

If it’s an overheating issue just replace the thermal paste on the chips. YLOD can be fixed just depends on what exactly is wrong. If your just gonna trash it I’ll buy it off you lmao.

Never blow dust into a fan like that, it generates voltage and can damage the board

I got a PS3 for free, it was supposed to get thrown away as "electro waste"... It works perfectly fine, but it's the slim model, so it plays only PS3 and PS1 games, DVD and BluRay.
