I guess nobody figured it out back then. You run a lot of boost with a big turbo. That combo launches soft and builds boost on the verge of traction while you watch the auto shift for you. It will have 650 hp while you have 500hp, no traction and can't out shift the auto which is only going to use 3-4 gears to beat your ass. If you did have an engine that made power mostly in the upper RPM range, with many more gears, you'd be shifting like a madman when the boost hit. It's about the combo. I've driven Supras and RX7s that hit so hard on the 1-2, you had no traction. A stable boat with a soft launch on a loaded converter, no need to shift and a long gear at half track wins. Won't turn in worth a $h1t though. Then on the street with limited traction, you'd better use slicks.

I had a Mustang that was a 2.73 geared auto with a modified 351 and C4 with a shift kit. The way this guy drove off from those two cars, I drove off from GNs. Easy to launch and wait for the rush and then the 1-2 happens then I see the headlight pattern beside me fade as the car drops back.

Did you see the old school trick we Turbo Buicks guys use in that vid?? See how the Turbo T's side marker lights get brighter when does the burnout and takes off? Volt booster to the alternator to make sure the fuel pump gets max volatage :)
