The Best & Worst Sony Full-Frame Cameras

In my longest video to date we dive into all of Sony's Alpha series full frame cameras to see which were successes, which were flops, and which have ascended to legend status amongst creatives. Starting with the Sony A7 back in 2013 and moving up until modern day, we will break down each camera including it's specs and what makes it different from the rest.

Note* This video was created prior to the launch of the A7Cii and the A7CR. As a result they will not be included in this video.

There's a lot of information in this video. If I did get something wrong I'll try my best to amend it with a pinned comment below.

I was a Sony FF mirrorless user from the start. The A7 was a good camera at the time, the A7r had brilliant image quality but was slow to respond, it was not a sorts camera, great for townscapes, interiors & architecture. The a7s was nothing short of revolutionary. The a7m2 added image stabe, the A7rM2 like the original A7s was a game changer but suffered poor battery life. The gen 3 cameras and A9 where the best to date for overall image quality with huge gains in autofocus. The gen 4 cameras have better functionality and another step up in autofocus ability with greater resolution, but at the expense of a little image quality. If I could have the A7rV with the A7rM3's sensor, I would be a very happy man, as it is I sold my 4th gen cameras and bought two A7iii's and a new A7riiiA. If you know how to use the focus modes the AF is just fine.

This video is a love letter to all the Sony fan boys like myself and I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you and keep up the great work.

Great review. Really an under served perspective. I hope you will extend it with the most recent models. For those of us who by used or behind the latest releases, this is very valuable perspective. Really should be more traction on this video for those approaching the mirrorless segment.

I've been shooting for a long time, and my graduation gift was the new Nikon D1X. The Sony a7r2 was the first mirrorless body that i purchased. When i got the chance to experience eye auto focus, i knew i would never go back to dslr again, unless it was just for the experience. I have been dealing with Sony ever since. Great video man, this was well done.

I started my photography/videography journey one year ago and was primarily shooting on my phone.I spent one month researching what camera should i get and in couple of days I'm getting A7IV with Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 🙂 Can't wait! Great video btw!

Amazing video Josh! It was an absolute blast to watch and helped a full-frame newcomer like myself get a heap of information! I started with just my phone and I have been having a wonderful time exploring photography with a Nikon D3100 DSLR that still produces some beautiful photos! I'm finally looking at upgrading to something new and I've got a keen eye on the Sony A7 line-up thanks to your video!

Great video! A long-time Canon shooter (plus some other brands along the way) I jumped into the Sony waters with the a7Rv. What a great system, and a good time to jump in. I didn’t have to deal with the original questionable colors, menus, poor battery life, overheating, and 30 minute record limits. It’s pretty smooth sailing at this point and the AF is remarkable.

Amazing video! You could've titled it as "the Story of Sony fullframe mirrorless"

Great video, but one correction. Sony e-mount predates the FE version of e-mount might be what you're thinking of? I purchased NEX 5 at launch and have been shooting Sony e mount since then.

When i jumped into mirrorless it was an aspc Sony nex 5n and boy did i feel like an early adopter. A little too early for my tastes.... that canon DSLR I purchased afterwards went belly up, I simply overshot its actualizations (photobooth work=lots of pictures) many years and many cameras later I still shoot with the 5n as my tiny street camera but finally got my hands on an FX3 and boy is the early NEX's menus a bunch of junk! Now that I shoot full frame I'm pretty sure I plan on staying with Sony even though i own some canon kit. In the end this is a personal choice provided the camera does what's needed then they are all amazing tools. I heard Niko Pueringer from Corridor crew once say... "Any camera is capable of creating an emotionally compelling image" that said I'd still take a Sony over a potato any day of the week!

Is buying second hand a7iii in 2023/24 good idea? I'm shooting stills only(xt2, xt4, 6dmk1 currently). Looking at those because prices for used ones became affordable within my budget.

a7RIII is a legend, the sensor is still one of the highest rated cameras

A7IV is actually the best choice in terms of cost and quality
