In this video we explain how to care for your Jade Bonsai tree, also known as the Portulacaria or Crassula. Watering, pruning, fertilizing - all these topics are discussed. Keeping a Jade Bonsai alive is not a difficult task, but there are a few things you should be aware of. For more information, also check:

Bonsai trees are planted in small pots with minimal space for water and nutrient reserves. That means you need to water and fertilize your tree regularly. Make sure your Bonsai gets plenty of light, water, and fertilize when needed and your tree is sure to thrive!

If you are not entirely sure about your tree species, you can use this guide to ID your Bonsai:

I literally forgot about a jade plant for over a year, discovered it again this week, it's already thriving and green again after a few days. Crazy plant haha.

Really admire the movement in the trunk and branches of these jades. It’s not commonly seen because it can be challenging to wire jades so most people only do clip-and-grow.

Edible portulacaria afra can withstand sub freezing temperatures, unlike crassula which is mildly poisonous. If you start losing leaves, the plant has likely been overwatered. Withholding water from the plant until its leaves gain a leathery texture can be an excellent way to prevent most root rot problems.

Will thrive indoors without direct sunlight though it is recommended.

Yay! I’ve been waiting for this video. I just started a jade bonsai. Does wrinkly leaves mean overwatering?

I have a couple of small (~4inches) Jade Plants that used to be one plant, but I split it in two. I got it specifically because I thought it would be a manageable plan to start my bonsai journey with. The plant has been easy to care for, and I've successfully gotten it to ramify several times, so each plant is topped by a healthy, round-ish crown of leaves. The only problem I'm having is that the trunks of both plants are so thin. How can I go about encouraging the plant to grow a thicker trunk?

When you repot do you put the plant in a larger pot? Can you keep it in the same pot adding fresh dirt to keep it small?

My afra trunk bark looks alot more brown then what I see in the video. Is that just lighting or is it a different variety?

Hoping someone can help! I got my jade bonsai last Feb. almost a year now. Within the last 3 weeks it started dropping all leaves and a lot of stems. They are shriveled up and the stems are completely dry inside. 😭 how do I fix it?!

Can a grow light replace direct sunlight?

They are not ‘different varieties’; they are different genus entirely. This is important because Jade, (that’s Portulacaria, the one with leaves that are the green and shape of chips of jade.) is an edible plant. Put some crunch, a tang of lemon and good nutrient into a salad. Crassula is not edible has big rounded leaves that are not as green and look more like coins hence ‘Money tree’.
Honestly people getting the names right and keeping them apart is not difficult. Ask any elephant, Jade is their favourite dinner.

Do you have to use a special fertilizer for bonsai. Or can you use all liquid fertilizers?
