I explain the difference between a viral infection and a bacterial infection; plus, I give your remedies for each type of infection. Well, it’s difficult because the symptoms are often the same: fever, developing a cold, muscle ache, sore throat. You could get a blood test to rule out a bacterial infection; otherwise, you’re not going to know.

Most respiratory infections are viral, although they can be bacterial. And you can have a combination of the two! A viral infection could last 7 to 10 days. If bacterial, 2 weeks. Note that if you have a viral infection, antibodies won’t work. If you take antibiotics too often, you set yourself up for a condition called antibiotic resistance, and the antibiotics won’t work anymore. Plus you’ll weaken your immune system, decrease the good gut flora you need, and be susceptible to secondary infections.

You suffer two types of damage with an infection. One way to protect against damage is to put your body in ketosis. When you have ketones, you decrease the damage from oxidants that your immune system releases when you have an infection.

Even if you don’t know which type of infection you have, here are remedies I recommend:

Olive leaf extract helps put viruses in remission but also helps with bacterial infections
Calcium also helps put viruses in remission. Remember, a virus isn’t alive. You’ll be at risk depending on your stress level, the quality of your diet, and whether you’re consuming sufficient nutrients. If you have a child with a fever, calcium will help them.

Increase your temperature; turn up the heat, climb into bed under many covers, and sweat. Take a hot bath or a hot shower

Consume lots of garlic, for either a viral or bacterial infection.

Do fasting. You usually lose your appetite anyway; that’s your body saying not to eat. Fasting can speed up the course of the infection.

Hey Dr. Berg. I went to my first Dr. appt. since starting Keto and IF. I never weighed throughout this journey, but I knew I was getting smaller. I had lost 104lbs in less than 5 months. I thought maybe I would have lost 50 and when I saw the scale I was astonished. I was down from 453 lbs to 349lbs. I still have a long way to go but I feel so much better.

My AIC is a 5.1 now on no meds and it was 6.9 on 220 units of insulin, and 2 grams of metformin a day before. I am still having way to high BP and I an EKG is showing signs of and enlarged left side to my heart, so I have agreed to go on lisinopril and amlodipine after much debate and reading. I view it as a temporary stop gap measure to get to where I loose more weight and get off the cigarettes. My next step is getting off the cigarettes. I am at the point where I don't need them as the crutch they used to be, I am simply addicted, but I know if I got of sugar I can get off nicotine. Sugar is far more addictive. Thanks for you videos they have been a huge help to me.

I had a terrible lung infection in 2016. My best friend is a doctor so he started prescribing them antibiotics. I finished "the full course of antibiotics" but I was getting worse so he prescribed me another course of antibiotics. I think he said since the first course (viral antibiotics) didn't work, it means the infection is bacterial so a bacterial antibiotics WILL WORK. Guess what! It didn't work but this time I got terribly bad. It was difficult to breathe and I had the worst fever in my life. I didn't believe human body can get that hot. The coughing was so bad that I couldn't inhale just like suffocation. I had pneumonia! The doc was gonna precribe a third course of antibiotics but this time "fungal". I was fed up and decided to NOT take more antibiotics. I remembered that grandma used to give us good herbal remedies for everything when we were children, may she rest in peace. I turned to her and she simply boiled some chamomile and told me to inhale the vapor, 3 times a day. I felt better gradually and by day 6 I was completely haled.

In my late 20s I developed seasonal nasal allergies, and as a result I began having chronic sinus infections. I’ve been on so many antibiotics over the years it’s been scary. Not only have I experienced antibiotic resistance a number of times, but my intestinal tract has suffered quite a bit, too. I’ve experienced IBS symptoms quite a few times in the past 3 years. :(

I went on a fat only fast when I was suffering from Chicken Pox. I believe it helped greatly as even with severe blisters and sores, there was no itching or discomfort.

I haven't seen a doctor in years, lack of funds. Luckily I've been feeling healthy enough- at least I think so. But if I ever do, I hope they will be like you!

Dr. Berg, can we please get your take on the Flu Shot? Thank you

Does anyone else get MORE hungry when they're sick? Everyone complains about loosing their appetite, but when I'm sick (cold, the flu, whatever) I'm constantly hungry. I'm very rarely sick, maybe once every 2-3 years, but when I am I usually gain a few pounds, haha.

speaking of resistance. what's your take on asymptomatic carriers? I thought when u didn't have symptoms your body has fought off the infection. how can you spread it if your not infected?
