I really like the idea of Tilda Swinton playing The Ancient One as male. Late last year I saw Maxine Peake play Hamlet and that convinced me that if the performance is good enough, it's easy to forget about it.

There are a lot of characters where traits such as gender race and sexuality are important aspects to the character, the ancient one never really came across as one of those characters to me

Since I'm not familiar with Dr. Strange comics, I could care less what gender the Ancient One is. Tilda sounds like a neat idea actually, one that doesn't sound too forced for the sake of getting more female characters in there. A androgynous character sounds interesting for this specific role. In the end, I won't care much, because I don't have any previous exposure to the Ancient One. :P

Why is it ok for a major non-minority character to be played by a minority actor, but not ok for a minor character to lose his minority status?
