How a 1-step automatic buttonhole foot works

This is how my 1 step automatic buttonhole foot works. It is the foot that comes with the Elna Lotus machine, but is similar to other one-step automatic buttonhole feet.

Put the button inside the slider and close the slider. As the automatic buttonhole foot tends to make buttonholes a little too large, I open the slider by two clicks so that I can pop out the button, then close it again by four clicks. Put the foot on the machine and lower the black lever which stops the feed dogs from moving the fabric too far. Position the bottom of the marking where the buttonhole should go under the needle, select the correct buttonhole function on the machine, and go!
