Thanks for demonstrating on this particular model. It's slightly different from the digital models when using this feature and you did a thorough explanation of them.

The Janome HD3000 and HD5000 are the same machine with the same number of stitches (18), except that the the 3000 has 2 decorative stitches swapped out for 2 practical stitches on the 5000. I just bought the HD5000 and it is a wonderful machine. These days, the higher tech and computerised machines are marketed as for the more experienced sewer, but I grew up sewing with my children's fashion designer aunt at my elbow, and she drilled into me that you need a strong basic machine, plus very careful cutting and constant ironing as you went along to make well-sewn garments. I bought this because I needed a good mechanical that could do knits, and with a knit foot (I have always used a walking foot, and so I am late to the game with the more simple knit foot, and I think I'm preferring the latter), zigzag or lightening stitch, and ball-point needles (microtex for things such as lycra), I could avoid serger and cover stitch machines.

The one-- and I mean only one-- complaint I have is that it does not make the best buttonholes. I thought it was me, but looking at every video, including this one, that demonstrates these 2 machines with the buttonhole attachment, it isn't. They aren't especially even on the 2 vertical sides. I think the problem would be solved if I could go over them twice, but when I've tried that, they've ended up in two different placements, overlapping each other. I think if I keep playing with it, I could probably get that perfected. The manual does tell you that to make the next buttonhole, just move the stitch selector to a different stitch, and then go back to the buttonholes. That also seems a bit odd to me, something a little fussy in the designing of this machine that should not be necessary.

I also have 2 other machines that make very nice buttonholes-- my mother's Kenmore 14 from either the 1980's or '90's (can't remember if we gave that to her for her 50th or 60th birthday), and my vintage Singer 15-91, which requires a separate buttonhole maker, complete with different cams for different sizes and shapes; so limited in that regard, you only have 9 options, but they are as good as the modern computerised machine buttonholes.

I am in no way trying to deter anyone from purchasing this machine-- I am so thrilled to have it, it really it tremendous. But if you want perfection buttonholes, you will need to use another machine, or make (or go over) them by hand.

I'll chime in here and say the HD5000 does good buttonholes as well. It's a bit fiddly to get the settings exactly right--I had to work the thread tension (4.5), and set the stitch width to between 4.5 & 5, plus remember to reset the stitch type from buttonhole to something else and back to buttonhole every time. But the results were outstanding.

Hello, When I first used the Janome New home for buttonholes it worked fine. Now, (after 10 or 15) it starts fine but in a few seconds the needle keeps going up and down without the fabric advancing leaving a knot of thread and no buttonhole. Your video made me think that the machine thinks it is finished. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you this helped me conquer this function on my machine!

I'm surprised that ALL sewing machines still do not have this "One-step Button Hole" feature! My wife has a Viking we bought way back in the 80's, and it has this feature. And the second Viking I bought for myself in 2015 has it
BUT, even today, none of the cheaper machines have it!

So the machine doesn’t automatically stop when it’s complete the sew for the button? You just take your foot off when you think it’s finished?

Do you have to use the reverse button or is it done automatically?
