currently struggling through this book, particularly formalizing certain things

Last Fall I attended course which was a mix of intro to category theory, intro to homological algebra and intro to algebraic topology. This was so hard that I learned almost nothing. This is the only course during my studies I did not pass (I resigned).
Gelfand-Manin book is a killer.

A combinatorial introduction to topology
by Michael Henle
This is the one to get you an intuitive undestanding.
