Great suggestions for a beginning prepper or someone looking to fill some holes. $11.90 in Central PA and that is with name-brand pinto beans because it's what was in stock. If you don't have spices, I would suggest Italian seasoning or some kind of broth powder.

I love your videos they teach people just some common sense how to do things and the key to do when you just preparing ahead of time make a list make a meal list and then go buy the ingredients to put that little meal together and if you only can do one meal kit every grocery shopping, at least you have done something to prepare. Blessings all

Thanks so much AG. I am retired and cannot really afford Mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. It’s hard enough right now to buy food. But I am trying to stock up a little at a time. Yes, beans and rice and canned goods mainly. And I do have extra seasonings too. God bless 😊

A few years back we had very little money to buy our regular food and would often get to the last 2 weeks of the month (monthly pay) and something would come up and we would really struggle, so I figured what were the most expensive “essentials” that I would need to get by 2 weeks including things like tp and laundry detergent (just enough for 2 weeks) and I started “shopping” my own cupboards the day before we went shopping I would take a pack of pasta we had left and a roll of toilet paper, a bottle of vegetable oil or a packet of salt, I hid what I had “shopped” in a box in the bedroom… we frequently had to “borrow” from the box just to get by and it took a full year to get all the things that I needed but after that year I was slowly able to continue stocking up and we have never had such a big problem if a big bill comes in 2 weeks before pay day again!

I live on disability only and I still prep, I also ride city buses to get around so that limits what I can haul. I have a little deck garden with pots that have herbs and greens in them

Perf, add a few small cans of diced tomatoes or tomato sauce, dehydrated onion, dehydrated bell peppers, etc and definitely use/let spices work their magic. Bottomline, you can live 3 wks w/o food, you're not going to starve to death in 2 or most grid down situations. Love rice & beans, flatbread P&Bs work for me to, or: canned tuna, maybe even sardines (sardines are an under appreciated superfood, wicked healthy, very inexpensive).

Your FYI tips are so good. Your commin sense reminds me of items i forgot in these stressful times. Thank you.
I buy whatever salsa is on sale to go with the beans and rice. Also powder gravy or sauces and taco seasoning goes great cooked in rice or beans add amount to your taste.
Be safe and alert you all.

I'm working on a Christmas gift for my 21 year old nephew. This year, he is going to get a small bug out bag. I've been collecting items at Academy Sports, the hardware store & the drug store. I just pick up one or two things while I'm there. So far, I have a collapsible cup, a military can opener, whistle, bic lighters, poncho, paracord, space blanket & and a sawyer mini water filter. I am hoping that he will start thinking about being prepared - who knows!

That was an excellent reminder for people who say, "I cannot afford to prepare." Unless you are homeless or dependent up the local food bank for your food, there is always a way to prepare a little more each payday. And even some people who depend upon a local food bank have found ways to gradually build up an emergency supply of dried beans, white rice and plain pasta from the assortment of food items given to them.

When I calculate how much food storage I want to have for my household, I aim for 2000 calories per person per day. Yes, children under 12 years need about two-thirds to half that amount, but staying with 2000 calories makes doing the math less complicated and leaves you with extras for more meals if you do have children. So, for three meals per day to get to that 2000 calories, that means about 667 calories per meal. And each person will need about 730, 000 calories for a year of basic food.

So, for inexpensive and easy breakfasts, I stock up on rolled oats, powdered nonfat milk and granulated cane sugar to make oatmeal porridge. And I make sure I have enough ingredients to make a 667-calorie bowl of porridge per person for the number of days of food storage I want to have. Little people with small appetites can give some of their porridge to larger people with larger appetites. The rolled oats and the powdered milk are repackaged in heat-sealed Mylar bags along with an oxygen absorber in each bag. The sugar is poured into food-safe, moisture proof containers with tight-fitting lids. Sugar is very heavy, so when using food buckets, I stick with the two-gallon size buckets. Powdered milk packaged this way in Mylar is good for at least 10 years in a cool, dry, vermin-free pantry. Rolled oats packaged this way will be good for about 20 years in that same pantry. Sugar packaged in a food safe moisture proof container is good for as long as the container lasts. If you can simmer water, you can make a hot bowl of porridge. If you cannot cook, you can soak the rolled oats overnight in clean water and then the next morning mix in some powdered milk and sugar to make meusli -- no cooking needed.

For mid-day and evening meals, I am aim for TWO 667-calorie meals per person for the desired number of days of emergency meals. About two-thirds of the calories in those meals will be from home-cooked white rice, plain pasta or instant potato flakes because those foods are inexpensive for the amount of calories you get per pound. For the remaining one-third of the calories in a meal, I will be using dried legumes (beans, peas, lentils) cooked at home plus a small amount of cooking oil and some seasonings. This flavored legume mixture will be a topping for the cooked rice, pasta or mashed potatoes. If I have some canned meat or cooked fresh meat, or cooked eggs or canned or cooked fresh vegetables to add to these meals, so much the better. But most of the calories will be from a basic starchy food topped with cooked legumes and oil.

Unopened glass or metal containers of olive oil and coconut oil are good for two to four years storage in a cool, dark location. So, the cooking oils have the shortest shelf life of all these basic foods and must be rotated/replaced every two to four years. But this is the only one of these very basic foods that must be rotated so often.

These very basic foods provide a lot of calories per raw pound and each food, except the cooking oils, have a moderate cost. Meals made from these basic foods are much more affordable than buying enough emergency food buckets or Mountain House instant meals pouches to feed your household for a year or however long you have set as your goal. If you do not want to repackage these foods for long-term storage and live in the U.S., you could buy these same basic foods, already packaged in #10 cans, at low cost from one of the Home Storage Center run by LDS volunteers.

I am really tired of people complaining about not being able to stock up without changing any of their habits. Try some of these "sacrifices"
1. Dump cable, streaming services, gym memberships.
2. Check your state's unclaimed property office. Maybe you have a deposit from a utility that didn 't get to you.
3. Double stack your pans when cooking. Put the green beans in a bowl on top of rice cooking. Also rice and pasta only need to be held at boiling for just a couple minutes. Cover.leave it on the burner and shut it off.
4. Does your utility company offer measured service where if you elect to do non-essential tasks outside of the prime time, you get a reduced rate.
5. Check with you cell/internet provider Ask for a bill review to make sure you are getting the lowest rates? Have they applied any discounts for which you are eligible like AAA, trade unions or asociations, credit union or banks,

One of the items I stock up on regularly is tomato sauce. It goes with a lot of meals that I cook, including lentils or pasta. I appreciate your positivity and yes, it is difficult watching this. I've been waiting for this for most of my life. I attended church on my own at 10. My parents weren't interested but sent me with my stepbrother one Sunday and it stuck. Later at 15 I saw a short film titled Future Shock after a book by Alvin Toffler. When the film was over, the class was unusually silent. That was when things started clicking for me. A wake up call as well as a rough time frame. I would like to encourage anyone reading this to heed granny's advice and even if you can only stock up a little extra at a time, do so. If all you can do is a little then do that. It will pay dividends later on when you need it.
