Did anyone else notice back when the V6’s started disappearing but the price stayed the same?

I had a 1 hp 4 speed, walk, trot, canter, gallop . Took care of more grass than a 12 hp riding mower . Kick start, keyless entry , organic exhaust system . Good ground clearance , some maintenance required but generally reliable .

I actually disagree with the comment about cars getting smaller. I think in general, they are getting larger. I think the 70’s and 80’s was the peak for tiny cars, after that the modern safety regulations pretty much killed them.

Most families these days are opting for SUV’s over sedans, and even the japanese/european commercial vehicles which have previously always been much smaller than American trucks and vans are getting bigger and bigger with each new generation. I’m Australian and I drive an old Mitsubishi L200 twin cab, if I park that thing next to a new Ford Ranger it looks like a little toy!

It's the same thing that's happened with agricultural tractors-many are using turbo-charged 4-cylinder diesels and farmers aren't liking them because of no low-end pulling power. (Plus a small to mid size newer tractor will run up to $200, 000.) The older ones with inline 6-cylinder diesels that would run forever are holding their value for this reason. Plus the older ones with minimal electronics would last multiple generations on the farm and will still be doing an honest day's work when the one's made today go to the scrap heap.
You're right-they don't want anything to last today.

Plus you can use the same engine across the model lineup. Then you tweak the output by adding equipment like turbo charges to get more horepower for heavier vehicles.

V6 all the way. Smoother. Quieter. More refined. Camry gets bashed for keeping their V6 for their top engine. I say they’re the only mature family sedan left. Keep going strong Camry!

I realize that 4 cylinder engines are becoming standard on cars due to the economic focus and 6 cylinders are moving into trucks these days for the same reason but call me "old school, " because I still prefer the smoothness, direct response and reserve power that the 8 cylinder has over smaller engines. Also the advancements in their technology have made them more economical than their counterparts were years ago.

I have a 2002 Rav4 AWD with a 2.0 engine and I just love it. The Rav4 is super simple to work on. The car doesn't even use a FOB or RFID chipped key, rather it just uses a simple normal key. Got an extra key cut the other day it only cost $3.00. The nice thing about the Toyota key is one key does everything.

Likewise, the early 2000 2.0 liter 4 cylinder Rav4 uses has a timing chain so no timing belt needs changing. The door panels are also ABS plastic so no rust.

As well, the serpentine belt can be easily changed using a simple breaker bar and socket. Even the starter is easily accessible and sits right over the transmission and can be removed in 10 minutes from under the hood.

I wish car manufacturers would have kept making cars this way. My Rav4 is over 16 years old with 250, 000 km and engine still purrs like a kitten. My Rav4 even has its original stainless steel exhaust.

Beside being a great small SUV, the Rav4 has a full size spare so if you have a flat you can just change the tire and keep on going (no need to pull over at the nearest gas station to fix the flat tire or use one of those temporary safety spares).

Even living in Canada, the Rav4 quickly heats up within 5 minutes in -20 degree C weather and never have had to plug the car in overnight either. NICE!

Cars today are built for planned obsolescence and only made to last for no more than 8 years.

The only bad thing I have to say is that the 2.0 engine only has 148 hp (not a lot but enough). Mind you, the Rav4 get surprisingly good gas mileage for an AWD and easily cruises down the highway at 110/120 km/hr.

Legendary Toyota build quality. Built to last.

I lov my old 92’ Celica 5SFE 4 cyln. 5sp manual. It’s only 135hp but she’s still going strong 26 years later. Toyota - oh what feeling.

My 2017 Honda accord has the 2.4L and gets 40 mpg on the highway at 75mph . I love it. Plus I use Amsoil so my mileage is great and I dont have to change it but once a year. Love it. Cost me $65.00 per year. I drive 20, 000 miles per year.
