Just came upon this video. My wife and I just sold our house and moved in with my parents to take care of my father, who is on hospice. My children have one room turned into a play room, but using a 7 foot tall shelf as a book case. Concerned it would fall, I needed to screw it to a stud in the wall. I have a stud finder but had no idea where, in the dozens of boxes, it would be. Tape, a sewing thread and a fridge magnet cut small, and I found a stud in literally 10 seconds. The house is over 160 years old, built by my great-great grandfather, and who knows what standard stud placements, or even stud widths they used back then. A legitimate and truly useful hack that works, works well, is easy, and is ensuring the safety of my children from 400 pounds of books and shelving crushing them! Did I mention that I didn't give you an ounce of credit and pretended like I thought of it myself. I looked like a genius. Lol

Thanks for the advice, I used an iWatch strap that has a magnet at the end, it seems to be neodymium cause its pretty strong, and attaches to all screw heads with no effort.

I've been using a similar technique for some years on my plaster and lath walls. I use a small rare earth magnet with a center hole and a foot of yarn tied to it.
