The pool world needs more like Jimmy Mataya, Earl Strickland, Keith McCready and Efren Reyes. They made pool exciting and appealing for average Joes. Too many pro pool players of the modern era are like robots. They seldom smile, seldom show emotion, always go for the safest shot. Pool is a gambler's game. That's what has kept it alive for so long.

I was a referee at the world straight pool tournament in Cleveland back in the 90s. I reffed Nick Varner v Pretty Boy Floyd. The match was long and tedious PBF was a bit of a jerk but that night we were the last 2 in the hotel lounge and Jim Mataya was very nice he apologized saying, that's my act, that's what I do. The next day I'm with my girlfriend having reffed his two hour plus match I started giving her a play by play of his antics before he displayed them not realizing his wife Eva was standing directly in front of me. She turned around and gave me a totally classy smile letting me know she heard every word I said.

I’m not an authority on pool, not even close. But I do have an opinion on the subject. A solid “money” player and a tournament champion require two totally different mind sets. I believe that TV tried to weed out certain players in order to clean up its act. Unfortunately, in doing so they made the sport more boring than golf.

That’s my great uncle my last name shoot be Mataya but I great grandma left Jimmy’s dad because he whent to jail and then my grandpa was born on a train so he had no birth certificate so his mom ment a guy with the name Holsted my grandpa didn’t like him so he was going to war but he had no birth certificate so he couldn’t join so he made to go my the name Holsted so he could fight. But my Grandpa and Jimmy were Half brothers

watched Shannon daulton beat him like a drum in Lexington ky after mataya ran his mouth at him . Dalton was a kid of about 15 to 16 years old . Absolutely not a Reyes or Strickland . Either could have given him the Seven in 9 ball.
