This Accessory is Likely Better Than You Think...

Today we're talking about the Shield of Cthulhu and why it's likely better than you think.

Of course, many of the Veteran players will probably be aware of this technique but I wanted to make this video for the general player base of Terraria because this shield does more than meets the eye.

Trust me. The SoC is absolutely ridiculous for its dash and I frames. In fact I often keep the SoC over the tabi just because of its I frames

I feel like I did actually start utilizing this a while back. If there was a melee attack I just didn't see myself avoiding, I'd just dash towards it.

I use this mainly as a panic resource, for example if queen bee catches me off-guard in a charge attack, I can simply dash and avoid damage, it's pretty handy!

I figured it out pretty quickly dashing into bosses. This item was integral to my calamity playthroughs because of just how easy it is to negate damage from hard-to-dodge dash attacks like those of PB Goliath.

Queen Bee was the only boss I really used this on so yes :)

I first noticed the effect when fighting queen bee, dashing against her when she dashes against you made me not take any damage

Fun Fact: You can use this method to completely negate the usually fatal damage from Explosive Bunnies. While it is a niche use (especially outside of FTW worlds), it can be used to deal massive damage to enemies and is quite fun to play around with. With fallspeed reducing gear, it can even be used as a way to stay in the air forever if you have enough Explosive Bunnies.

Even without knowing this I thought the SoC was the best accessory in the game (based on when you get it, how long it's useful for, etc). But now? Man put this in SSS tier and put 2nd place in C tier.

I honestly think it's the best all-around accessory in the game, even just using the dash to dodge projectiles is soo good if you're skilled at using it. I keep it equipped from the second I get it to endgame. Edit: I even love it just to instantly get the full speed on spectre boots.

i've used the i-frames from the SoC for as long as i can remember, it's actually crazy how good of an accessory it is for a very easy fight. then there's some expert mode accessories you basically never use from way tougher fights and much later in the game.

As nice as this mechanic is, I never really like how it bonks you back. So if you're trying to dash AWAY from something and hit an enemy in the middle of the dash, you're screwed. I really want something like the Solar Flare armor's dash but earlier.

as someone who used to play a lot of dark souls, dashing to get I-frames doesnt seem cheesy at all seeing as how using the I-frames you get from rolling in dark souls is basically mandatory to not die.

I first noticed this effect on a late-game SoC-like item from Calamity, during Yharon's fight. Tested it back in vanilla, and found my new favorite strat for Queen Bee. (Not that she needed to be any easier, now that I know how easy she is with Bezoar poison resistance, which I for some reason never used before) Never though to use this for Duke Fishron though! This seems like a good alternative to my personal strat, which is using the Crystal Assassin Armor's dash and beating Duke pre-mech bosses.

i used to always get so excited whenever i would play terraria again due to the cucu shield. By far one of my favorite items in the game. Some bonus stuff you can do is you can use it to clip into 1 wide hole roofs to have a doorless base, as you can just grapplehook out through the same area. Awesome for having a base that you can shoot through without ever exposing yourself to danger and being able to leave just as easy.

Never used this on fishron due to skipping him most playthroughs, but yeah, I've been abusing this since I started playing expert - it was literally the first thing I noticed when I used it in the skeletron fight.
