The Borg or Dominion will be end game crisis options. If it is a total reskin it has to have something for those.

Well the Dominion doesn't have territory in the alpha/beta quadrants until the war begins when it pretty much takes over Cardassian space so maybe the faction has an in-game start event? It wouldn't make sense for it to be there at the start unless it's really late stage Next Gen.

Reminds me of _Birth of the Federation._ I really loved that game. It had Ferengi as a faction to play. If you got them rolling, whatever worlds you couldn't bribe, you could annihilate with excessive torpedoes. 😆

This honestly could be a Stellaris mod with the way it’s looking 😂

The borg are gonna be a midgame/endgame crisis on that i'm 100% sure.

I'm still kinda excited on a new Star Trek strategy game incoming. The Stellaris engine is still quite nice even today.
BUT if they decide to really just do a reskin and keep all the Stellaris mechanics without actually changing anything i'll stay with playing Stellaris and playing with mods.

With the way Stellaris gets massively overhauled every other year into a completely different game, I wonder how a spin off title like this would look like in 5 years. Will it just be a time capsule of this era of Stellaris? I doubt a small dev team would have the time to update it into whatever future form the main game takes in that time.

If they embrace the “alternate history” type of choice-based stuff you can do with HoI and they update the aesthetic for battles and how combat works, I think this could be pretty awesome. I’m a bit on the fence that it’s literally just looking like a reskin as-is, now. They really need to showcase what sets this apart from Stellaris asap.

This is essentially the sequal to Birth of the Federation that we have been wanting for over 25 years. I personally am excited for this.

There's nothing wrong with reskins in themselves, it's what you do with them that makes a difference. Even Stellaris I don't feel really uses the full potential of Stellaris with regard to storytelling. Probably a mod for that somewhere. I sure hope they have the guts to go with warp travel again rather than reuse hyperlanes.

they better have the Borg as a playable faction at some point, they were my favorite faction in star trek armada 1 and 2

This is literally already a set of mods for Stellaris lol, they even had Q as the tutorial guy

The "Shut up and take my money" meme can not properly express my feelings about this.

I get that there are a couple of mods for Stellaris but those are huge and frankly have steep learning curves that I, in my middle age, no longer have the hours to dedicate to learn. I want base Stellaris with Trek skins. I want this so badly.

Thanks for the news that is is coming this year.

The one thing I think this would be a bit over the mod for me, is that it stops before Picard and doesn't involve Discovery.

people say, because it's a reskin, Stellaris with mods and DLC may be the better choice

I feel like the Borg are going to be a Crisis event. However, I would also like to see the Borg become a playable faction. As for the Dominion, being my favourite race in terms of their starship designs, even if they're an as-yet-unrevealed Crisis event, I think it's inevitable that they will become a playable faction with an appropriate DLC. You can't not have a game based in the TNG/DS9 era, or even close to it, without planning for the future. Dominion *WILL HAVE TO BE* a DLC/expansion at some point. The base game will focus on the Alpha Quadrant, but there's too much potential in the Beta, Gamma and Delta quadrants to ignore them - and both Stellaris and the Star Trek inspired mods it has currently *demonstrate* this is already possible.

Given this is *HEAVILY* based on Stellaris code (if not a, as you say, Stellaris reskin), I don't think it's a stretch that Paradox will have a hand in the future development of the title - especially considering they're the publisher. Honestly, paid DLC is "the norm" these days. For a game *not* to have DLC, that's unusual. New ideas, new concepts, new mechanics get added and, in my opinion, rightly the developer/publisher would naturally want to receive some kind of reimbursement for that time spent.

As for how this game will be different, given what little we've been shown thus far - I don't believe we'll be able to "make our own race", nor will we be able to design our own ships. We may be able to research better weapons/shields/armour/warp drives - either specifically and requiring a refit at a starbase, or as a generic buff to all ships in the fleet once the research is complete - but the actual ships will be what they are. At least that's what the tiny example of the Klingon build tree demonstrates. Personally, I think that's okay. It'll be a balance nightmare, but it'll be okay. I think this game will be much more heavily "story" based: a Star Trek-based expansion of the 'Situation' events from Stellaris.

Given that there are minor factions also in game, the way each faction will be able to interact with them will be different (I would imagine), with the Federation being more about keeping them at a distance until they're ready for First Contact, whereas the Cardassians (for example) might be able to conquer the planet and enslave the populace. I'm not entirely sure what the Romulans would do precisely, but I imagine it would revolve around some form of Tal Shiar clandestine operation to subvert the ruling body and deliver it to the Senate. The Klingons will either conquer a foe, or ignore those not worth fighting and admit those worthy enough to enter the halls of Sto'Vo'Kor into the Empire... I doubt very much the Federation player will be allowed to conquer a pre-warp civilisation just because. I think the playstyle for each race will be restricted in what is, and is not, possible. I dunno, just spitballing...

In terms of replayability I'm going to assume, at this point, that we'll have a 'canon' Alpha Quadrant map that will not change (but your approach to it might change from game to game, as might the AIs actions so each game will be slightly different in the details). Eventually, someone will figure out the optimal progression path for each race during each playthrough but it'll take time. But I also believe they'll have a 'Random Quadrant Generator' (given Stellaris proves it possible, it'd be quite silly not to include it) so those games, specifically, will provide a unique experience each time. And, perhaps, in the 'RQG', any restrictions on a faction's playstyle will be lifted - so a peace-loving Klingon Empire might unite lesser species under it banner while the Federation attempts to enslave any and all weaker species.

Overall, while I do share some of the same concerns you do, I am quietly optimistic about STI (unfortunate acronym). It's the first Star Trek game that isn't mobile or MMO-based in a long time. It's based on/is a copy of a highly successful game in the same genre this game is going to be and it enables much of the story-driven content. I think this will be more of a "RPG 4X" whereby you'll roleplay (or through the restrictions mentioned before, be forced to play within the role) as your chosen faction - the game rewarding you for doing so (so the payoff for being a sneaky Romulan or an honourable Klingon is greater than just smashing everything with your fleet). I'm looking forward to it. I just want to play as the Dominion.
