What's shaking, folks! I'm back with another Japan reaction, and this time we listen to a bonus track included in an expanded folder for their 1980 album Gentlemen Take Polaroids, "The Width of a Room." Apologies, even knowing lyrics are more phonetic and conceptual at this point, I spent a minute or so thinking about the title ... and it's another instrumental, lol. But seriously, this was a really cool and melancholic track that had me thinking about the emotion and character of physical spaces, so join me for a top track from this unique band. Cheers!

It always sounds like a TV theme tune to an Agatha Cristie novel to me

I quite like this, missing David's voice, though. 'The Width of a Room' was a line from 'Nightporter'. The following line was 'that can hold so much pleasure inside' - perhaps this music represents that?

Kudos to you Matt. No one else has (yet) obviously had the desire to take a deep dive into Japans little gems such as this one. I have the 2x7" of Gentleman Take Polaroids and it is one of my most treasured possessions. Wonderful mood pieces on that piece of vinyl. Too bad the vinyl itself and especially the 7" format has such physical limitations or should I say shortcomings and often cannot produce pristine sound the way it was supposed to be heard - especially when it comes to pure ambient pieces like this one.
