What's up, people! I'm back with another Japan reaction from their 1980 album Gentlemen Take Polaroids, and this time we listen to "Ain't That Peculiar." I feel like maybe this song is a cover (?)---it just sounds like a Cole Porter title or something---but either way, this is another fantastically creative sonic journey courtesy of David Sylvian and Japan. So join me as we embark on another impossibly unique song by this one-of-a-kind band. Cheers!

Yo! So I accidentally removed a comment from this video (I was trying to "love" it but selected the wrong sub-option because my hands are clumsy, apparently). And once I mistakenly did that, I couldn't undo it or see who wrote it. So my bad to whoever wrote the now-missing comment! Really annoyed that happened. Mea culpa!

Love! How to take a great song and make it your own. The lyric is the is treat me mean, keep me keen type story - the more you hurt me, the more I love you (common theme among Sixties tunes, this sort of masochistic love). I love songs that feature words that seem strange in pop songs and this is one. Peculiarity. I love the loping rhythm, it's spacious and echoey, great to dance to and just peculiar, in a really fantastic way.

Ain't That Peculiar was originally recorded by Marvin Gaye , produced and co-written by Smokey Robinson.
Robinson was also the original artist for "I Second That Emotion", which Japan previously covered.
Again, both covers completely transform the the song and take it in a completely new direction. I love both the original and covers in equally different ways

We're getting so close to Nightporter and Taking Islands In Africa...I cant wait for the reaction. I think both will blow you away.

As per, it's difficult to make out the words, a shame as here you would really benefit from hearing the lyrics... that said, the track as a whole is so fascinating sonically i let that bit slide.
If u want a clearer version, go for Marvin Gaye's version
