If you're flying on a plane in a thunderstorm, you should be more worried about the wind than the lightning.

I work for Fedex express, and our plane that flys our freight in everyday got struck three consecutive times one night, like last week. It has to be repaired from the holes it got from it, but everything else was fine! Thanks skin effect!

Those little "sticks" are called static discharges aka static wicks. They dissipate static electricity into the air. Also, on the planes I work on (RC-135) have been hit by lightning and the bolts like to exit out of the radome at the nose. Radar hasn't been messed up by it (probably because the antenna and receiver/transmitter is grounded to the plane) but we have to change radomes quite a bit because lightning puts holes in them because they're fiberglass. We have HF antennas that also use lightning arrestors that look like a giant glass buss fuse that breaks apart when lightning hits the antenna to prevent electricity from going into the transmitter.

If it gets struck by lightening, it becomes _The Flash_ and has super speed.

I am a mechanic for one of the largest airlines in the world and from a practical perspective the damage caused by lightning looks like pitting or sometimes little metallic melted blobs. Check out a pito static sensor that had a lightning strike. Didn't do any significant damage. Sometimes the damage may require changing a component or doing some repair work but unfortunately a servicing vehicle or cargo ramp can cause way more damage when they bump into the aircraft. Modern airliners are extensively engineered and tested and as statistics show, you are far more likely to be in an accident on the drive to and from the airport than in an airliner. I and my family fly so come join us

The rain (and lightning) in Spain falls mainly on the... *Plane.*

My plane got struck by lightning one time. We were flying to Seattle and it was super rainy, there was a lot of turbulence. My sister was freaking out and I was laughing, it was kinda like a Rolar coaster to me. Everything was fine, but suddenly there was a blinding flash just out our window, I was stunned. I looked at my sister who was also frozen. At that point a million outcomes had popped into my head. To be honest I thought I was surely going to die. And then just...laughed? I smiled. For some reason. 5 minutes of confusion passed and suddenly the flight attendant announced that we were fine. I was so relieved.

That's how time travel works, right? Anybody down to crowd fund an airplane with me?

I was actually going to google this but you saved me from reading. Thanks.

Talks about sensitive electronics going haywire when lighting goes through them, shows analog gauges.

Don't worry if you on plane when struck by lightning the lightning hit plane, the plane has lightning rod, when plane hitted by lighting those lightning will out from lightning rod

I work manufacturing sheet metal parts for aerospace. A significant amount of work goes into meeting Electrical Bonding requirements to make sure that parts in contact with each other maintain electrical conductivity even after having finishes applied to them to reduce corrosion. Alodine is typically used on these areas as anodized surface do not conduct electricity well.

You posted this video during the only storm I had this year.

This seems relevant seeing as last night there was nearly constant lighting in the clouds.

WOW. Besides the good explanation, you stopped jumping and twitching while explaining. That made the video a lot easier to watch. THAAAANKS
