When I sat my IELTS test one month ago the examiner asked me *Where are you from?* and I thought "this is my opportunity to show off" so I started saying *I am from Spain, from a tropical island located...* the examiner right after I said the word 'Spain' turned her head around and grabbed a pen or something as she did not expected a longer answer. So I suddenly stopped talking. It was a very awkward situation. My recommendation is that you should try to elaborate your answers but more important is to be natural and notice if the examiner's expressions indicate that they are waiting for a short or longer answer. The lady who was my examiner was nice though, and my score was not that bad either at the end: 7.5)

I would like to share my experience with Jay and his students here.

I'm from India, a non-native speaker. I gave my IELTS Academic in October 2018 (first attempt) and I got a speaking score of 8.5. (Overall 8)

1. All credit to Jay and his methods. For all sections.
2. I did use the PPF method and the examiner was floored.
3. My topic was "Talk about a sport that you have watched, but haven't played and would like to play it in future".

So it was a little difficult to apply PPF so I just did past and future only. I have watched rugby on TV but I have never played it, dut dut dut. Another sport that I would like to watch in future and thence play it, is baseball dut dut dut.

4. One point of contention to you Jay. I spoke for probably 1:45 and concluded. But the examiner said "Is there something more you'd like to add" I was not expecting this. Apparently examiners in India do this. They expect you to talk for a full 2 minutes. So let your students be prepared to add up a couple of sentences at the end.

I owe my exam completely to Jay. Didn't follow any other tutor.

I was still speaking on the "present" when my two minutes was over! I like the. IPPF method -- it gives you the opportunity to speak freely for the entire two minutes. Thanks Jay.

You’re absolutely right that the 2 mins on the exam day are absolutely different from those at home. During practice, i used to go beyond 2 mins. But on the exam day i fell short of the 2 mins even after using the PPF strategy.

But but but... thanks to the IPPF strategy that i got a 8.5 band in my first attempt. I am a non-native speaker.

Wow! Jay, this method is everything! I was here by myself talking to you on the other end of the computer like you were here with me. When i was done talking about the email using the IPPF method, i felt so good about my performance. And then with you saying "how did that go" I went "yeah, it was good!" I said it before realising you were not actually present here with me. I believe my speaking, based on this, would a 9.5 lol...
