Welcome to Hacking ABA ! In this video, May Beaubrun, M.Ed, BCBA, LBA talks about the critical aspect of trauma-informed care within the context of Applied Behavior Analysis. Trauma can have profound and long-lasting effects on individuals' well-being, and it's crucial for practitioners to be well-informed and equipped to handle such cases with sensitivity and expertise.

We begin by exploring the significance of practicing within the scope of competence and minimizing the risk of behavior-change interventions, as outlined in the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts. This serves as a foundation for understanding the importance of trauma-informed care, especially when dealing with clients who have experienced adverse childhood experiences and traumatic events.

Drawing on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), we highlight the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences and emphasize the increased vulnerability of children and adolescents in foster or residential care, as well as individuals with developmental disabilities.

Understanding the impact of trauma on clients is essential for designing effective, individualized clinical interventions. We discuss the concept of being trauma-informed, which involves recognizing the history of past and current abuse and using that understanding to facilitate client participation in service systems without retraumatizing them.

May delves into practical examples of trauma-informed treatment recommendations, such as adjusting intervention strategies based on the client's history of neglect or physical abuse. Furthermore, we shed light on the barriers to discussing trauma within behavior analysis, emphasizing the need to consider how past events can influence internal responses.

Referencing Rajaraman et al.'s 2022 framework for incorporating trauma-informed care into Applied Behavior Analysis, we delve into the key principles of acknowledging trauma, ensuring safety and trust, promoting choice and shared governance, and emphasizing skill-building. These principles are crucial for upholding the tenets of trauma-informed care and avoiding re-traumatization.
