Teacher Success Stories II: Launch Your Classroom! Episode 43

In this special episode of Launch Your Classroom, Kyle and the EPI Team share the stories of three inspiring teachers who excel in student engagement, building class rapport, and differentiating their lessons.

One of the best ways to improve your teaching is to look at the successful practices of master teachers! In this episode, we look at how teachers boost learner engagement through the use of active learning and games. Others show us how to build strong student teacher relationships as well as peer rapport, which helps with classroom management. Finally, we speak with a teacher whose success comes from their ability to differentiate when they teach their content. By combining these elements, teachers create a classroom climate of growth, positivity, and trust.

Teachers who can keep students engaged will see greater academic success throughout the school year. By using multiple teaching strategies to motivate students, such as those involving active learning, games, and collaboration, teachers can keep students interested in their content and maintain their attention, which decreases the need to correct misbehavior. Students also see more success when they have a strong relationship with their teacher and other students. In the ideal classroom, all students feel like they bring value to the class, and have strengths and ideas that will benefit the whole. Teachers can employ strategies that get students comfortable sharing with one another. Differentiation contributes to the ideal classroom by giving every student choice, multiple methods for accessing the content, and individual ways to show what they have learned.

The Ask the Experts strategy builds relationships between you and your students and a sense of classroom community. Each time a student demonstrates a useful skill to have in the classroom, ask the student to demonstrate the skill to the class or explain why it is useful. Explain why you find the skill useful and designate that student as an “expert” who can help others.
By creating an “Experts Board” you give each of your students a chance to shine, which will work wonders for student behavior and your classroom management.

Be sure to find an area of expertise in each of your students. If it takes a while to see a student’s strengths, don’t give up! Remember soft skills such as responsibility and organization. Assigning and rotating classroom jobs can help you figure out the hidden skills of some of your students, as well.
