Mariah’s pen has been the only one involved in most of her music, and she’s brought on collaborators to write with her on some songs but with the exception of covers that she has done, she has never sang anything she hasn’t written in her entire discography. It was one of the only stipulations she was able to get through her label as a freshly signed 18 year old, which is remarkably impressive and is one of the reasons she owns her entire catalog, not something many artists have to their credit.

The way she sang in the Daydream era is so perfect that it almost bothers me. I rarely revisit it because it's like, so effortlessly perfect that I don't care. Like, who can do that???

Mariah does melisma without it seeming like melisma. It's so amazing how intricate all her melodies are, not only with riffs, runs and melisma in general, but also register switching. I very much respect Beyoncé, but even though she is like a robot (perfectly executing all her riffs), the subtlety and musicality of Mariah's runs are above all other singers I've ever heard. She is almost superhuman.

in the 90's she was a breath of fresh air, new sound, new vocals everything in between and out of the universe, gorgeous., music videos, live performances, her own background singer sheesh come on.... her talent and work ethic is why she thrived and managed to carry on for so many years, and yes she is still my fave.

I always show people Mariah Carey's live versions of "I Want To Know What Love Is" when I want to display her vocal range and singing ability. The switches from chest to head to whistle and back again, sometimes all in the same lyric. It shows off her classic and beautiful tone and agility. But also her performance ability, being able to put on a show and display musical genius. One of my favs is her performance on X Factor UK.
