The Point: China's facial recognition and how it's reported

This week's headline buster talks about China's facial recognition tech. Facial recognition has been used widely across China, powering the technology to unlock iPhones, to pass security checks at airports, and purchase goods with a "smile to pay" function. At its core, it is a biometric software application capable of verifying or identifying a person by comparing and analyzing patterns of facial images.

However, it does trigger concerns about data privacy, and such concerns have not gone unnoticed by technology experts or government officials in China.

Guests: James Early, CEO at Stansberry China; Zhang Fan, associate professor at Beijing Normal University; Rick Dunham, director of the Global Business Program at Tsinghua University.

So good of Liu Xin to stand up for Western hypocrisy and particularly the media . Whatever China does is wrong and criticise by the West The China bashing goes on and is very divisive . Indeed very sorry for the people of China to cop all the rhetoric. My take is simply ignore their arrogance and mindset but like Liu Xin stand firm and defend what is right. China will continue to do what it does best for its people and time will definitely be on their side. There is always the silent majority around the world that support you Liu Xin👏👏💪💪

Action speaks louder than words. As long as China ‘ do the right thing’, US and its lackeys can’t damage China’s reputation. Even in developing countries, people are getting more and more educated, hopefully they can have their own independent thinking and figure out whether who is a world contributor and who is not. Although I am not from China, I support China for its positive impact on the world, but China do have to be more careful with its autonomous region for most of the officials lack PR skills or even EQ to handle crisis. For eg, just by showing beautiful Xinjiang with ppl smiling as if they were happy won’t work .

Liu Xin has an "English" name, but I find it classy she uses her "Chinese" name in English. That's pride, that's ballsy as this is for an English speaking audience.

Anyways, having watched all the bullshit Western media channels for many decades, I find Liu Xin's reporting very fresh, modern and 'relevant'. She's ballin' and actually I feel like she'll be getting more viewers and viewers as people start to return to 'critical thinking'.

China don't wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, China will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.

I absolutely do not agree with that American professor, because I do not hear or read about US or UK surveillance technology, usage and commercial sales being written in the same way with the same sort of connotations and underlying messages, to the same scale that they are pushing for Chinese facial recognition companies. And when they do talk about it, it is usually with the context of the company and leave the country out or casually referred to, but when it comes to Chinese companies, it's all about China, what company are they talking about? I don't know, it's not even important, I just get bombarded with the belief that it is the Chinese government.

It is all about one-word "jealousy" from United State on China achievements and successful economic power and AI advancement.

Before your government stops the genocide and culture genocide, like to Uyghur and Tibet, your handling of tech-knowledge will alway be questioned and heavily criticized, because you would be considered as a threat to humanity.

What American courts is he referring to when he says the courts have drawn a line on authorities storing data for non-criminal reasons? Which American court? That's a blatant lie.

In China, the most conversation I’ve heard about “cameras” is “why there is no cameras in this area?”

If you do not break the law, there’s nothing to fear! Having a facial recognition camera at home, in business, in public areas will deter criminals from committing crimes.
