P-Bass Shootout!! Which sounds best?

Here's a shootout featuring four Precision (or 'P-Bass-adjacent') basses from my collection!

-2008 Fender MiM Precision
-2005 Yamaha BB414
-2023 Kala Solid-Body U•Bass
-1978 Fender USA Precision

🎵- 'New Year's Day, by U2, from 'War' (1983)

My verdict?

Winner's got to be the USA P-Bass in terms of closeness to the original tone and pure roadworn MOJO.

BUT:
The U•Bass deserves a massive honourable mention! Why? It's insane how close it sounds to the original recording, and the other basses! That it can even be seriously considered in the same category as three other, much more well-known and more oft-recorded, full-size bass guitars, despite a 23-inch scale length and being a completely new design, is incredible work by Kala really 🤯 (also it's mega fun to play)

For this track the first one is perfect

That Yamaha is a surprise winner for me, and, as I'm shopping for an inexpensive P-Bass and one of those has just popped up in classifieds, I might have just made a choice. A used mexican P-Bass is an equivalent of ca. $200 more, good Japanese "lawsuit era" Fender copies (and I do love those) - even more than that. I wanted something with a maple board (purely aesthetic preference) but I can live with rosewood when I get such a good tone in return.

That yamaha wins by a mile. The mini bass is my second favorite. Such a huge sound out of such a small package

78 P-Bass, with Yamaha a close second, but both sound great.

Must say, gonna give it to the Yamaha, much deeper note, whole note, dense and light .ooouuuggg, love ley.
