I don’t think people understand it yet, but this technology is so groundbreaking that it could save tens of thousands over the next couple of years. Think of all the people in small plane crashes or hiking incidents that weren’t found until it’s too late. This could be a game changer for a lot of people

I upgraded to an iPhone 13 about a week ago and finally decided to swap it out with a 14. I plan on visiting the Rockies to do some hiking. This is gonna give me incredible peace of mind knowing that regardless of how remote I am, I’ll be able to contact someone in case of an emergency.

"Emergency services, what's the emergency?"
"I need help, I was playing pokemonGo and I got lost."
"Is anyone hurt?"
"Yes, pikachu fainted."

Everyone is seriously underestimating this groundbreaking technology. Upon thinking about how many accidents occur worldwide from every day to every year, this feature will no doubt save countless amount of lives.

This is a definite selling point. If you ever find yourself stranded with a broken leg on a mountaintop in Tibet, you’re covered!

I’ve been saying for years Apple should buy or incorporate Garmin GPS, mapping, SOS, tech in their products. About time! Garmin’s GUI, execution, service, and reliability are horrible.

FYI, the part where cellular modems are being turned satellite-capable is a large vision and undertaking by multiple companies and research institutions within the standardization umbrella "3GPP".
This means that your regular cell-service will be truly global/ubiquitous in the future. With low-bandwidth applications like this one at first and once the satellite constellations have expanded sufficiently and the tech matured - probably (relatively cheap) broadband.

All this to say:
- Apple are ahead with the value proposition and clever app building.
- Android will also be getting this feature.
- More incredible features are likely to come down the line

The cost will likely be transferred to your carrier subscription who will have to collaborate with satellite operators to maintain the non-terrestrial cellular satellite network.

How much is going to cost after the free 2 years?

This could have made that Fall movie a lot shorter.

people are underestimate this feature at the very begining, give it a more time to their engineer to release more powerful SOS emergency call. This would save a life. Imagine your plane or boat lost or crash on somewhere and your radio is fuckup, your chance of life just this smartphone and battery. No, not everyone bringing a sattelite phone every time.

It should be free of charge because I can't imagine somebody going to die and their I phone asking them to pay their monthly subscription.

This is literally the feature I wanted last year when I got the 13pro and the sole feature that will get me to upgrade to the 14 pro now

Thay should put this on the other phones

Need not be in some remote location. What about wide-spread power outtage and cell towers are done, no service. This would be the needed service then too.

Hope this SOS could be a standard feature for all new smart phones soon and no cost any more from carrier
