Nvidia Shield TV - Pro 500 GB vs. 16GB version & Benchmarks

The Pro differs only through its 500 GB internal hard drive. This is available as main Android storage which is useful for Android gamers running higher end titles. The hard drive is not user upgradeable.

We also take a look at some 3DMark benchmarks to see how it performs vs. other Android devices and smart phones.

I'm glad I left the 500gb alone. The pro had some major issues with hdd failure already. I don't trust the 500gb model. I've had no issues with storage. Some games require that I wait for the data to download before moving the app to the sd or it only moves the app but I got tons of games on mine with plenty of left over storage. I also have a thumb drive loaded with roms for emulators and everything. I'm not even using foldermount and i'm doing great with storage.

great update Lon. I do have one question. the 500gb version I think is out there so ppl can DVR things. What if be interested to know is if the 16gb can receive the TV input (even if it's but ideal to record to (with is 16gb storage)). ooh, last question, the 500gb drive is an SSD? kind regards, I do love the reviews you put out. they're quick and punchy, but they don't skip the important details and you present well I think.

I already have had the 16GB shield console and its been great. I wondering when the 1 year is up for the warranty is it possible to install a 500GB hard drive in to the 16 GB unit. My understanding of the two systems is they are same with the exception of the memory. Do you have any Idea i really don't what to sell this one lose money and then buy the 500GB

You should do a tutorial on hooking connecting cables to what for : HDHomerun Prime, Nvidia Shield Pro (using 500GB NAS) and a router. From my research this saves a lot from chord cutting.

Just a note for anyone looking at a newer shield... Nvidia cut and SD card expansion slot from it. My guess is to sell more Pro versions...

Lon, plugging in a WD 1 tb external hard drive to the 16gb version wouldn't help for downloading games? So we're forced to buy the Pro version?

Hi I've just ordered the nvidia shield 16gb version and after watching your vid think I maybe should have ordered the pro. Only really use it for streaming (kodimterrarium) but looking at a few set up vids noticed that you need to download quite a few apps to set it up. I'm in the uk so don't really want the hassle of sending it back to usa. I've ordered the the scan disc 128gb usb as well so wanted to know if it'll will suit my needs? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just got the TV pro and I didn't do anything with it yet, but now I'm hearing some bad feedback about involving the hard drive did they fix that problem? As of January 26th I still having set up my box yet but worried about the hard drive rumors have they been taken care of

foldermount solves the problem of large apps by allowing you to move the files to an external storage and then "mount" the files so that it appears as if they have never moved.

Unfortunately however this will require root access.

Lon Seidman do you recommend to purchase this console I already own a ouya but as we know ouya cant emulate game cube or n64 or dreamcast is the nvidia shield tv is emulating this devices with no problems?

Really loved the thorough and complete brief introductory review on the Nvidia Shield Pro seems like a winner for $300, it is undoubtedly the top dog Android Box to beat; I pulled the trigger and got the Nvida Shield Pro and it definitely seems to deliver on the promise of high performance; I could definitely see it making a great Kodi/XBMC multimedia box largely due to its massive built in hybrid hard drive with its integrated SSD;

quick question Lon is it possible to upgrade the internal hybrid hard drive up to a 500Gb SSD type of drive; now if that were in fact actually possible it would make the NVidia Shield Pro perform without operating equal in terms of performance on android boxes; no other android boxes are even worth bothering to upgrade in terms of adding SSD drive; as you said Lon one could add an extra SSD type drive via USB 3 port but anything connected natively via external port really cannot be used natively like an internal memory drive setup like in the current NVidia Shield Pro box; now if only the current hard drive could somehow be upgraded to a ridiculously fast SSD type of drive; I am sure the already fairly high measured performance benchmarks would come fairly close to the regular non hard drive ram memory based NVidia Shield box with 16Gb of memory; the Nvidia Shield Pro box if equipped with a SSD drive somehow; would be default I am certain be just as fast as the regular Nvidia Shield 16Gb memory box; the other added plus is the SSD drive would be completely silent running, very high performing with little if any drive latency since its flash ram based memory and also consume negligible amounts of consumed power; just imagine for a moment having almost 500Gb SSD of storage capacity in internal memory on an android box; that would be almost guarantee almost unheard of levels of hardcore gaming performance just about!!

You make a compelling argument for the product in these videos, but the storage issue is something that would keep me from buying it. If the 500gb model were $250, or if I knew I could store everything on an external hard drive, I might actually consider if I didn't already have a PC on every TV.
