One of the worst trends is CVT transmissions and to top it off, no manual options on most cars.

Yep modern cars have improved a lot... Air conditioning barely needs maintenance now. Radiators and coolant last very long. Only electronics give headaches

Also, modern ignition systems. I haven’t been around as long as you Scotty (44) but I do remember going out and jump starting people all the time during the winter with moisture in the distributor caps and wet ignition coils etc. modern ignition systems produce a hotter spark and are less susceptible to moisture and cold wintry conditions. This goes hand-in-hand with modern fuel injection systems. No more failed choke pull off’s and frozen carburetors or flooded engines.

Another improvement is in coolant hoses that used to bust and leak but now being made out of silicone instead of rubber, they seem to last indefinitely like in my 17 year old 2002 Mercury Grand Marquis. Great video.

Scotty, you are still a young mechanic. My boss is 88 old and does plumbing just about six days a week. He tells people when he turned 70 that he was still in his prime and took up some jobs, off the coast of Scotland on oil rigs. He is still helping people. You are helping me out quite a bit, keep up the good work.

Modern cars also need less oil changes compared to before,
Engine oil quality has improved a lot, last much longer

Hey Scotty, another great trend in the last 15 or 20 years is that cars don't require tuneup very often. The cars from the 50s 60s and 70s needed a tuneup quite often.

I remember when I replaced the bias ply tires on my 1965 GTO with steel belted radials. Holy Cow!! What an improvement! Same experience with my 1970 VW bus. Radials made the bus drive like nothing I had ever experienced before. The bus felt like the tires had glue, the way they griped the road on turns. The VW bus had never been so stable on the road. I never looked back, and have pretty much used Michelin Radials on all my vehicles since.

I drive same car as your Mother. I live in Maine and no rust yet at 200, 000 miles and it runs great.

Very true about the exhaust systems not rusting apart, you don't see abandoned mufflers on the roadside like you use to.

I have 14 vw Passat and I’m so thankful for having a drive chain I know a friend who had to replace his entire engine on his deer old truck. He loved that thing.

All season tires are a 3 seasons tire. All weather tires are a 4 season tire but winter tires still work better than all seasons tires in the snow. If in doubt drive to Whistler BC after a fresh 50 cm dump of snow
