Love these discussion videos! It can be worth it to stay behind, in addition to more population like you say, for extra influence for a second outpost AND enough influence to annex it as soon as you build your city in the classical era. An second outpost in the Neolithic only costs 20. If you wait until classical era it costs 60. I've had a lot of success placing down 2 outposts, securing 30 additional influence for annexation, and then advancing. The best way to go do this is take at least one mammoth and as many science curiosities as you can. Just a little Neolithic food for thought.

If you start an outpost with more than one unit in the stack it builds significantly faster. i.e. if it will take 6 turns with one unit then it will take 3 turns with 2 units. They don't have to stay there for the turns, they just need to be stacked in the same hex when you create the outpost.
