Direct & Newsstand Value Gap 💵 Expensive Comic Books

CGC Comics recently announced that they are recognizing newsstands and multipack comics so I decided to dig in my collection to locate a couple of books to send in. I am surprised by some of the value gaps seen between newsstand versus direct comics and direct versus newsstand. Did anything surprise you about the values. Which comics would you resubmit?

The newstand/direct variant fad is one of the oddest movements in comic collecting. It’s not even based on logic, because circulation numbers were wildly variable until about the mid 90’s, so there is no great way to nail down the true scarcity of either version.

I expect it will take a few years, but I am pretty sure this fad will fade.

I personally don't think that you should send the books in to be reholstered just to get that newsstand label it doesn't increase the value of the book because you have the label saying it's a newsstand collectors know when they look at the book there's a new stand right there and you're taking the chance on not receiving the same grade that you sent in it could be a lower grade. great video

I personally don't collect based on the rarity distinction. I love all the little direct edition boxes on the cover, especially when it's a character like Spider-Man tossed on there. It's a little bonus art for me. Just my preference though.

Yeah I have plenty of graded newsstand slabs... but there no need for me to send to CGC just to get the newsstand label .. I know my slabs a is a newsstand version… To me it not necessary to spend a extra 20 per slab … great video

I would not resubmit because it's obvious that those are newsstands and is it really worth the time, effort and expense to have things changed to basically state the obvious?
I agree with you on the Gambit cover. I have a Punisher #1 (mini series - Zeck) in a newsstand and could not figure out why that was showing a lower value than the direct. Had me scratching my head...

A lot of ppl are focused on the fact that its going to say newsstand on the label but lets talk about cleaning up the census and getting to know what the true population on the census is. A lot of newsstands are under the same census as direct. This will give a idea of the true population.

I wouldn't send anything in to be reholdered if they have the new cases (which yours already do). Just so it says "newstand edition" on it when you can see it from a distance that those are newstand. MAYBE if you were getting new labels or something like that. I'd wait for next Jim Lee, send them in then, get sigs and new labels.

I was going to try and say things to sound smart, but I just have too little knowledge on the subject. I know the difference and eras between newsstand and direct, but I still haven't gotten grading all figured out eut. Regardless, great info and a great new sponsor. Congrats!

Regie, definitely send in your 9.8 newsstand moderns for relabel! I just received 2 modern submissions from CGC from end of 2021. Many of those books came back with the NEWSSTAND EDITION promptly featured in BOLD on the label, and I am getting 3x the selling price vs Direct on my 9.8 X-Men copies. I think it's a combination of the new CGC label & more collectors realizing the scarcity of high grade copies due to newsstand versions not being as carefully displayed or handled. I think the biggest deltas are going to be on 9.8 copies, however. Because of this, and you'll likely see less diparity on 9.6 and lower newsstand copies. Even if more newsstand copies of a particular copy exist over direct, I still feel there will be a premium on 9.8 newsstand due to scarcity at that high grades -- certainly enough to merit the extra charge for a relabel.

Great vid. As one who is just getting back into collecting, I never paid attention to newsstand vs direct. In fact I just tried to get a lower price on a book based on direct pricing and was surprised that it wasn’t accepted until I saw that newsstand mark. I say if it is a flip book it may be worth it but if it is a PC bound book, I would pass.

Yeah I've been a new stand collector since 95 but roughly about 90% of my comics are all newsstand

I worked at a shop in the early to mid 2000s and at that time we would put most newsstand comics in the bargain bins especially xmen #1 and early Image titles. I can’t believe that we were the only shop doing so. That could also help explain why these editions are hard to find in high grade. Also newsstand edition a lot of the time were printed on different paper than the direct editions. Wild CATS #2 newsstand had just a white cover instead of the foil cover that the direct edition came with.

Why would you do that? Can't people see the newsstand on the cover! Great books and grades, but, what happens if they get damage when they re-hold them.

If the news stand sign is in the front why would you get it reslabbed it's literally showing you Hey I'm a newsstand
