Onboard cameras aboard the R/V Deep Stim III capture the final moments afloat of the massive ship as it sinks in the Gulf of Mexico. Ocean water is seen rushing over the deck and into the wheelhouse as the vessel descends to the seafloor below.

Just prior to departing the sinking ship, video host Joe Kistel turned on several onboard cameras to document the sinking. This video shows the intense and spectacular views these cameras recorded as the vessel succumbed to the ocean and sank to the seafloor.

This ship was sunk intentionally to create marine habitat as well as a fishing and scuba diving location in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The project is a result of a tri-county partnership between Destin/Fort Walton Beach, Walton County, and Panama City beach. Other organizations including the Coastal Conservation Association Florida, Emerald Coast Reef Association, and the South Walton Artificial Reef Association also contributed toward the effort. The ship was properly prepared and cleaned to a condition making it ideal for marine habitat creation prior to the deployment.

Within months the vessel will start to colonize with organisms such as corals and sponges. Multiple fish species will use the wreck for shelter and resources. Over time, the underwater world this sunken ship will give life to, will mimic the biological activity of nearby natural reef systems.

This vessel resides in the Gulf, near Destin Florida, close to where the SS United States will be sunk to create an artificial reef.

Awesome. Cool that we got to watch it go all the way to the sea floor

Where is this? And how do you pick the ideal place to sink it? How do you determine what ships are eligible for sinking (for the purpose of creating reefs/marine life habitats), and what boats are not a candidate for that? Also, those little pyramids you installed on the deck to create even better optimum environment for starting reefs, why only place 4 or 6 of them? Why not attach as many as possible to the ship? So many questions.

cool vid.... it would be awesome if underwater cameras could capture a ship underwater as she goes down. seeing it sink in real time and how fast it travels going down.

What good is putting cameras inside it if you’re not going to show inside shots of it while it’s descending

That's cool, not only did you get video of it ( thanks for sharing ) but also lucky enough, to dive first at that site .

Its more interesting when there's stuff inside of it

Beautiful shots and fantastic mini-doc about the scuttling! How do you decide where to place the cameras and how long do you have to leave the wreck before you can go and recover the cameras?

Very cool, was the sound of it impacting the bottom caught on video? Like the views of the underwater decent 👌

I always wonder how a metal rusting natural reef on the bottom of the water a good thing. Its like tobacco will calm your nerves but it can kill you

Wow! Great video! You all make it look easy! That thing went down perfectly! Congratulations! What's the depth to sand there?

All that rust and oil can't be all that good

Missed oppurtunity.
No having cameras or divers outside and underwater, not filming the descent of the vessel.

But, yes it's about time we give back to nature

seeing this made me think of a ship sinking i saw on the namibian coast of a old vessel being sunk but they didnt remove any internal components and only removed 60% of its oil and coolent for the fridges before blowing it up, insulation from the fridgesand the ship itself (made from asbestos wool) and oil ended up on the shore along with all the aluminum left behind in the ship is still down their still with their insulation

I would love to see what the boat looks like, after it has been inhabited.
