Sorry guys a correction: zoom compact with the largest sensor should be the Canon G1X Mark III. I vaguely remember there's a Canon compact with large sensor but I couldn't find it when I was doing VO, I even thought I was wrong at the moment! Of course that one has a much slower lens, the only advantage could be just dynamic range.

Thanks Lok for taking the time to review the LX100 Mark II. I actually bought the Original lx100 after watching your excellent original lx100 video a couple of years ago, and I have found it to be the most versatile and enjoyable camera I've ever owned and I want to thank you for such an honest and helpful review, I believe it's the best review on the LX100 anywhere!

Originally I got the lx100 as an inexpensive 4k B-roll and travel camera, but after using it on a couple of professional shoots for less Conspicuous candid shots, I found I got more good images with the LX100 than with my Full-Frame D600 Nikon or Panasonic GX-8, mainly because of the uncomplicated operation, reasonably good autofocus, the pop of the Summilux lens and not having to waste time changing lenses.

I was a bit disappointed however to see the LX-100 MKII to not be more of an advancement, but the 20.1 mp sensor in the GX-8 is an improvement in terms of noise over the LX100 and GH4, but not in terms of Color and the look of the original LX100, hopefully Panasonic has retained the Leica look of the original LX100 in the MKII rather than just the GX8's "out of the box" look and mediocre JPEGS when compared to the LX100.

When I started using the lx100 with Capture One 11 rather than Lightroom, I noticed a significant Improvement in apparent detail, micro contrast, colors and noise, so much so that the advantage of the Leica Summilux lens and Leica color processing that seems to be shared with the D-Lux 109 became apparent, On several shoots where I’ve used the D-600 Nikon with Nikon zooms and primes, and GX-8 with the 22-35mm Vario X 2.8 and Panasonic Prime Lenses the LX-100 often bests them in terms of pleasing color and realism. The Added detail of the Summilux lens images often end up looking more detailed on screen and up to 11” X 14” prints than other cameras with nearly twice the MP.

I’ve also found that with Capture One I can often recover one to two extra Megapixels of frame size.

I have found the Panasonic mobile app handy for stealthy candid and street shooting, as I can control the power zoom from the app and trigger the nearly silent leaf shutter while seeing a realtime view. I can look like I'm just using my phone while I zoom and snap images with the camera hanging from a strap or with it setting on a table.

However, In difference to your comment in your original LX100 video where you said dynamic range was “Ok but nothing to shout about” with careful RAW exposure and processing I’ve found I a lot of useable shadow and highlight detail and found it as good or better than many cameras that are generally assumed to be much better.

As far as video, I’ve been very happy with the LX100 considering it’s a consumer grade video camera that shoots 8-bit video. I do like that the Leica look is also carried over to the Video side, and I often get better-looking images that require little or no grading and look better than what I get from my GH4 and GX8, and the Original LX100 also has a custom profile curve that can be adjusted to give somewhat of LOG look, I actually prefer to the 8-bit Log profiles in the GH4 and GX8.

Looking forward to an in-depth review of the LX100 MK II.

Wait no flipscreen? No mic input? Card still at the bottom? MORE crop when using 4K? Did Panasonic not know what features we wanted? Well, I guess I'm keeping the Mark 1.

After so many years it really should have an articulating screen and mic input. And for sure vlog-l at least.

No mic jack, your selfie filming is totally out of focus I guess Panasonic still doesn't know how to do video AF, you couldn't see how bad you're out of focus since the display is not flippable, there is no IBIS your video is a shaky mess, too bad. Don't buy this camera for video.

Great outro mate. I do enjoy your videos. I can not say that the LX100II has enough for me to sell my original and upgrade. Add a flip screen and mic jack and I might have been swayed.

The first model is my favourite camera of all time (I have an A9 etc as well), but I always craved a little higher MP count. That alone is enough for me. Shame about the lack of flip screen but it’s not a weatherproof camera so I can live without all that. USB charging is a massive bonus.

I built my channel on the LX100 and still use it everyday. MK2 looks the same, but it`s got some nice upgrades.

Okay so I get that this camera is missing a lot things that a lot of people (including me) would love to have. BUT since I bought this camera I hardly ever take my Sony A7 III with me anymore. The LX100 2 is just so much fun to shoot with and the results are really good.

Is the ergo exactly the same as the LX100 i? If it is, I'm thinking it might soon be the best time than ever to pick up a mark i.
